Yeah, the homes are that way. I totally know we're your at because I'm actually looking for a place, too. I'm moving off campus next semester and I need an apartment! So I can sympathize with your situation.

I would recommend, if I may be so bold, the Auke Bay area. It's less expensive than downtown and I like the feel of it- more laid back. However, if you work downtown the commute can be killer since gas is definitely not cheap!
Hey X

Are they still talking about developing that land into some sort of cookie cutter neighborhood there off the back loop road? I know some of the people with the pricey homes in that area were complaning that the development would drive down their property values and bring unwanted congestion and maybe neighbors? I always liked the fact that JNU wasn't littered with those piece of cr*p developments we have in the lesser 48. It would be sad to see that take root.

Hmm... I haven't heard anything about that lately. I don't read the paper, but I did just drive out that way and I didn't see any major construction going on.
What everyone's up in arms about right now is the sunny drive overpass. Don't know how long it's been since you've been here, but they've pretty well messed up egan right in that area so they can build an overpass there. Of course, once it's built everyone will be like, "oh, this is actually really helpful!" The same thing happened when they built the roundabout on douglas. We all made fun of it, but now I can't imagine driving over there without it!

I was last there in July...I don't remember seeing it then. I do know all about the Douglas roundabout though. It doesn't seem like it would do much, but it really does help filter the traffic through.

I never thought of Auke Bay! We commute around 100 miles a day now so that doesn't look to bad at all

Sometimes. But most coupons are not for organic food, so not usually.

Question Still Dreaming!!

Hello. This is my first post to this site. I was in Juneau for a one week stay in March of 1985 on a church building trip on Douglas Island. We worked on the Assembly of God church just down the road from the bridge from Juneau. Well, it rained quite a bit and we spent a lot of time shoveling that fine glacial silt away from the foundation but, I fell in love with Alaska in that week. We stayed at a nice home about a mile or less from the Mendenhall Glacier and that last day we were there we got out to the glacier and then had a three hour boat ride out on the bay (had engine trouble and ended up getting towed back by the Coast Guard). I seriously considered not coming home with the group, getting a job there (HVAC technician), and coming home in a month or two to gather up the wife and three kids and move north for good. BUT, too many family roots here in Pa. Well, the kids are grown now and on their own and I'm still dreaming. I'm now on disability but I can still do some part-time work (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, Handi-man stuff). Question? How is the job market in the Juneau, Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay area for a self-employed heating, plumbing, electrical handi-man? We have about $1,500.00 monthly income without either of us working. Is Home Depot still hiring as I worked for them down here part-time for awhile? I would appreciate some input from any residents in the area.

Well, right now the job market is being flooded with seasonal stuff. A friend of mine took his uncle to the job service to try to find him a job- he is trained in home construction and the like, and he said that every single job was in the tourist industry... which is not encouraging. Home depot is likely still hiring, we we also have a locally owned hardware store that may be hiring. Check this page:
Don Abel Building Supply (http://www.donabel.biz/jobs.html - broken link)

Good luck!

I really enjoyed your post and we are from the same state! My wife and I live around the Johnstown, Pa area. If it were not for commitments to the institutions we work at we would be out of here tomorrow. We plan on heading to Juneau for a week or two to meet the individuals in the community, financial institutions, potential employers etc. The wife has a quaint little B&B picked out that we thought we be a good place to stay and get the "skinny" on Juneau. I have to laugh though, we read the Empire every day, we know all the places to eat, trails, community events and such. We want to try and understand the sense of community as much as possible before we move there. Other than, what I see as a serious problem with no sense of state, Juneau as a tremendous sense of community. I think the entire state complains and moans about who has what etc.. This power issue has brought some really ugly state verses community issues to light. You know as well as I had this happened in PA Rendell would have been on-site the day after declaring emergency funds. In the case of Juneau there seems to be a major battle over who pays what, who survives and who doesn't. Sad actually, very sad that they can't come together when a city needs help in case such as this.
