Hi all! Is there anyone here that lives in Anchorage, Alaska? We will be moving there in few months and was wondering if my houseplants will still thrive out there. Not sure if I should take my collection of different houseplants or if I should just sell them. Is it hard to find and buy new plants out there? Also, how do I prepare for canada/ US Border customs? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

What sorts of plants are they? Of course you can grow houseplants in Anchorage! Depending on where your house will be located and the sun exposure some might not do as well during the winter. The angle is low and days are short. Full sun plants like succulents will struggle in winter without supplemental lighting, but in summer they should be OK. Winter heating will dry out more delicate plants however. You probably won't find as much variety of houseplants for sale as you might down south.

How are you getting here? If you are bringing belongings in a car, you could certainly bring some if they can handle the temp fluctuations and maybe low light during your trip. If you are using a closed cargo truck they may not survive in total darkness for multiple days.

There are multiple threads discussing crossing the US - Canada border. I've only used the ferry for moves back and forth so haven't crossed through the border stations. Others can chime in...but you can save trouble by finding these threads yourself using a forum search and checking online. Obviously you'll need proper documents for you and pets, and firearms will be an issue.

These may help:

While there are no restrictions for bringing plants into Alaska there is for Canada. They may let you through or they may toss them. More than likely they will toss them due to the soil. Why not just give them away or sell them and buy local? Traveling with them will not be good for them anyway. I doubt it is hard to find plants that are local to Alaska.

If you have family or friends who can except them by mail, I'd suggest mailing them. They should arrive in three days from most places in the Lower 48. Remove them from their pots, if the pots are ceramic. wrap the soil and roots in dark plastic bags. Then use bubble wrap and pack them tight so they don't bounce around in the box. Water them, if needed before shipping. They should arrive in good order.

I wouldn't count on 3 days unless you send them 2 day or overnight. Depending on what part of AK they are going to anyway. I've had plants sent to me in several places in AK and don't think they ever made it that fast.

We have house plants in Anchorage and everywhere in AK. In a few months it is going to be winter to moving them may be problematic. It is not hard to find and buy houseplants. Heck you can get plants at the grocery store.

Some people get very attached to their houseplants. To the point of giving them names and having a funeral when one dies.

Count me one who has a few special plants...some were ordered from specialist nurseries because of what they are. They've moved with me and I've had a couple of them for about 15 years. Can't say I've held funerals for any, but I am pretty attached to them and care about what happens to them.

I have a few house plants in my home right now that came with me from Virginia 25 years ago. I had them in boxes for the drive up. Not sure if they were allowed through Canada but the border agent was more focused on my guns and never asked or looked for plants.

How do you prepare for customs? Contact them if you have doubts.

My friend just had to move and he had plants that are over twice as old as me. (I'm 33.) Just in the garden.

Which shocked me. Im not a greenthumb so that was pretty cool to hear and learn. They started off in Nova Scotia.

Giving them names and funerals are.... No disrespect to anyone but come on. lol.
