I saw that they moved the bus today. Saw pictures of it in the air, then parked on the side of the Parks on a dropdeck. Not sure where it's headed.

Several years ago there was a small restaurant in Chitina, called "Road Kill cafe," where lots of people used to stop-by on their way back from the Copper River. They had the best cinnamon rolls I ever tasted (called "sticky buns"), and on my way home after dip-netting I used to bring some to share with my wife and kids.

About the bus: the state should have moved to bus before it was made famous. And as I mentioned before, the trail to the bus should be marked with "travel at your own risk signs," and the cost of rescue passed down to the travelers who get in trouble. While I don't care much for BLM, the trail could be regulated, and the rules posted by them. Such posts should mention who's going to pay for the rescue, since the "pilgrimages" aren't going to stop any time soon. Dummies will still make it out there and sleep in tents. Just look at the thread, "Living like a hunter-gatherer." That kind of illusion will always exist.

I was called on the carpet recently for a similar statement and had to clarify to some very angry people that I was referring to the BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT, which is also what Ray is referring to above.

Let's not get into the other discussion on this thread - not the place for it - just wanted to make a point of clarity for folks visiting the Alaska forum.

The hazards of acronyms! I do work for BLM and it's been an adjustment to seeing that acronym being used to mean a whole nother thing.

As to the bus, they should stick it somewhere near the beginning of the Stampede Trail. I think allowing people to see it without having to cross the Tek, would almost eliminate the rescues caused by this story.

You'd hope so, but there will probably be a couple who insist on visiting the actual place where McCandless expired. Someone that driven may consider it's poignancy diluted anyplace else. Fine. Go risk your life on your own dime!
