Let's not get into the other discussion on this thread - not the place for it - just wanted to make a point of clarity for folks visiting the Alaska forum.
I had no idea! Thank you for clarifying.

This will accomplish nothing. The people who hike out there, are looking for an experience. If they just wanted to see a stupid bus, they would go to the brewpub and see the movie replica. People are still going to hike out there, and some of them will still need to be rescued.

If the state of Alaska took possession of the bus, then it’s the citizen’s bus by default. People should have a say in what happens to the bus, or it should be auctioned off legitimately like any other old defunct piece of equipment the state owns. Seems like there is some overreach here. Who is in charge of the recently relocated bus and why?

Well guess what? You are still going to have to pay for it. Rescuing outdoor recreationalist from the backcountry is part of the normal financial burden on taxpayers everywhere. It always has been, always will be. The good news is, that it doesn't cost much. A basic helicopter rescue costs about $500 - $1,000. That monster they brought in to move that bus was probably burning up that much fuel every 5 minutes. So your financial burden just increased a lot.

Don't gloat.

If the BLM, NPS or other federal agency were responsible for moving that bus YOU just paid for it too!

That is why I'm taking this opportunity to complain about this incredible waste of money.

But for your information it was the Alaska Army National Guard that moved the bus at the request and in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. So that makes it a state mission. Therefor I believe it is Alaska taxpayers who paid for it. The BLM and the NPS had nothing to do with it, to the best of my understanding. I doubt that the BLM or the NPS even cared about the bus. Alaskans seem to be the only ones who were even concerned about the bus being there.

There's been 15 rescues and 2 people have died because of that bus - so yeah, we were concerned about it. As for choppering it out, you act like those helicopters just sit in a hanger somewhere waiting for a "real" mission. Crews need to fly them to remain proficient. They will spend a certain amount of time in the air each month regardless of whether there is a public nuisance to remove or not.

Since you are in Oregon, what makes you an expert and concerned about things that happen in Alaska?

Last I checked there was no C-D rule that you could only post in the forum of the state you reside in. As for being an expert, I didn't know that living in a state, makes you an expert on what happens there.
