This is a little different from the standard relo to AK. Spouse and I (mid-50's) are planning to move to Palmer and live with our daughter and family. The purpose is to help her with the kids so she can finish nursing school (1-2 years). After that, head to TN for our forever home. I work remotely so I can work from just about anywhere.

We currently reside in FL and hope to maintain residency here until we move to TN. What are some of the things we should be considering (vehicle shipping, auto insurance, driver's license, etc.)?

Why would you want to maintain FL residency if you are not planning to move back there? At least for now, AK residents pay no income tax, state sales tax, and get a free check every year.

That's very nice of you to do that for your daughter. Hopefully it will work out well for everyone.

Simply keep your FL licenses. If they're set to expire within two years, renew them now.

It's a long haul from FL to AK, so unless you're excited about driving this route you may want to unload the current vehicle inventory in FL. Your automotive needs may not be of such importance in Palmer as they have been.

Obviously the wardrobe will need some attention. Warm clothes and footwear a must for winter time.

Northrick - we planned to maintain residency for the tax breaks. However, if they are similar or better in AK, that might be a consideration. As far as the annual check, you have to be there starting in Jan at least a year before you can apply so that's not really a consideration for us.

Arktikos - We aren't real keen on driving, however, it won't kill us either. We planned to drive to CO first and spend 1-2 weeks with our son, then finish the trip with a couple of stops at some sites. Spouse's license expires next year and FL will not allow renewal prior to 30 days - we'll be in AK at that time.

We looked at shipping the truck but that seems to be 5-10K. Seems like a huge cost but we are still exploring options.

What kinds or tax break are you talking about. Neither FL or AK have State income taxes.

It took us nearly a month to get here but we finally made it. The Corona virus outbreak put a real damper on the trip. We couldn't see anything and had to rush the trip - driving in winter conditions was not something we planned. At least we are finally here. Thanks for the input!

Let's hope you didn't bring any unwanted microbial hitchhikers along with you! Did this timeline include self-quarantine once you arrived?

Actually, we are on day 13 of our self-quarantine (self-quarantined along the way as well). I'm in the high-risk category, so we did everything we could to be safe.
