Where are you camping and how are you getting there? How many people?

THIS! There must be thousands of tent designs available. Without knowing what specific type of camping you plan to do (car camping, backpacking, etc), where, what time of year and weather you need to plan for, how many people it needs to shelter, and how you'll be transporting it no one can make much of a recommendation. I get the sense that you haven't been camping before.

If you are strictly car camping, with a vehicle always available for retreat, you can go for a roomier tent. The design is not so important, just pick a tent that will be comfortable. For one person you can use a tent that's marketed as a 2- or 3-person tent. For two people go for a 4-person tent. Also, it's easier to get dressed if the tent is tall enough to stand, at least in the center of the tent.

On the other hand, if there are times when the tent will be your only protection from the weather (e.g., backpacking, canoeing, etc), choose a tent that's shorter and dome-shaped. Something that will hold up in a strong wind.

A rain fly is a feature I always like to have, but you could probably go with no fly for car camping. A vestibule is also a very nice feature. It makes a nice spot for leaving shoes and wet jackets outside the tent.

In either case, be sure to buy a ground cloth. I just use a piece of heavy plastic. You can make life easier if you cut it to the right size for your tent. It should be a few inches smaller than the tent in each direction. If it were to extend out beyond the tent it will collect rain that then ends up under the tent. The ground cloth will protect the floor of your tent from pebbles, and will help you stay dry.

Your tent will last longer if you follow a few simple practices. Sweep out any debris (dirt, pine needles, etc) before rolling it up. Take your shoes off before you step into the tent. And if you have to pack it up wet, be sure to set it up again at home to dry it out, and then roll it up again for storage.

Just depends on where you are going I guess. Tent needs flat smooth spot. Hammock needs trees or vertical supports. Of course spacing of those supports needs to be appropriate, but there is a decent amount of leeway if you are prepared for it. I have spent way more time in tent than hammock, but had better sleep in hammock.
