Is it better to camp in a tent or hammock?

How much do you enjoy mosquito bites? The view from a hammock is better.

There is more protection from bears in an RV or camper. Although you can set up an electric bear fence and probably be safe enough in a hammock.

I've got to say, first time posters sure come up with some weird questions. How about some more information about what you are planning to do, OP?

Not either one is better since it isn't really safe against big wild animals or being eaten alive by mosquitoes. An RV is best to camp in just in case you are suddenly awakened in the middle of the night and immediately have to get into the driver's seat of the RV and be prepared to drive away from there as fast as you can.

A tent is much better.

- it doesn't require support trees with compliant spacing, pitch it anywhere
- it shields you from cold rain, hordes of biting insects, and somewhat from wind
- it won't keep out determined wildlife, but I think it does provide some protection against the casual/curious passerby

A tent does weigh more, but if you get a good backpacking tent, it's not too bad.

Never eat in the tent and never put food in the tent period - that's a great way to attract marauding wildlife. You hang it from a tree, well away from the trunk, ground and branches, or (ideally) put it in a stout bearproof container, well away from your tent.

I like hammocks, but the tent is must much more practical given the terrain, bugs, and weather. It's a lot nicer to be stuck in a tent you can sit up in during an extended downpour.

And when I say tent, I mean free-standing one. Those ultralight or old school ones you have stake out can be a real pita if you're in a rocky or sandy area.

Honestly it doesn't sound like you know much about hammocks.

Benefits of a hammock.
- It doesn't require level ground. Pitch it on any terrain with trees. Camp on the side of a mountain if you like. Try that with your tent.
- A rain fly will protect you from cold rain, just as well as a tent will and a bug net solves the flying insect problem. As for crawling insects, you are much less likely to wake up covered in fire ants in a hammock.
- It should offer just as good a protection from wildlife. Much better protection from small animals that might invade a tent.

Other benefits:
- Lightweight
- Quicker and easier to set up.
- More comfortable.
- Keeps you dry even when the ground is wet.
- Keeps you cool in warm weather. Though that's probably less of a concern in Alaska.

The truth is this question has no correct answer. It all depends on your personal preferences and requirements.
