Check in to the Alaska State Troopers. They earn Great money for anyone in the Criminal Justice Field. Significantly more than anywhere in the lower 48. I wouldn't say it's EASY to get into the force - but you have the regular interview, physical and general hiring process. They are generally ALWAYS hiring though.

Housing is always expensive and prices are inflated. Shopping - down by anchorage. I don't usually shop until I get to Seattle. I would look at what kind of population you're looking for, and then judge schools and locations. There are ALWAYS things to do - it is only important that you make it what you want it to be. If you're willing to go outside - hike, look for activities, and get involved in the communities - you will love it.

Good Luck - and seriously check out the Alaska State Troopers!

I don't know that the Troopers get to pick what community they are going to live in at first...I think they send them out to Prince of Wales first and let them practice on us.

They get to rate the FTO locations 1 - 3 and sometimes get their first choice. Not all posts in Alaska are Field Training locations. Depending on how the recruit did in the academy is how they are ranked graduating. The better you do - the more likely you are to get your first choice.

I have lived in Alaska for over 18 years I am so ready to move to a warmer state I am tired of the winters and driving on the ice. You really must like outdoor winter activitys to be happy here. Also I live in Anchorage and you really have to pick and choose your neiborhoods it is getting pretty ghetto up here probably from the lack of things too do. Jobs i would say are pretty good. Alaska is Beautiful but it is just not warm enough for me. Also keep in mind if you ever wanna drive to another state you will have to go threw canada.. And yes moving up here with cars and house hold goods will be pricey. The cost of living is pretty high check out the craigslist up here a decent place to rent is anywhere from 1300-1700. That is more like a townhouse or condo. I have bad expirences with apartments ghetto people living next too you and too loud i couldnt go back to an apartment. Good luck with your move
