I am hoping that I get this job i applied for at Alaska Airlines, but I just realized that I am not white, and may not be accepted, and might be run out of the state. Can anyone tell me if black people are allowed here. I know here in Washington state we are ok, but I have always wanted to live in Alaska, but scared

I attended church services at ChangePoint Church here in Anchorage today and they had a black man preaching. He did a good job but you could tell he wanted to just break out and bust-a-move. The majority of the congregation was lilly white but I did see a few people of color in the audience.

Good luck on the job. I worked for Alaska Airlines in Ketchican for 7 years. We didn't have any blacks working there but that's just because there aren't many in Ketchikan to begin with. I think racism is pretty much a thing of the past to some degree in Alaska.

well that is very good to hear. I am like the whitest black person ever, so i feel more comfortable around white people than black, but you never know with a new situation. Let's see if i get the job

Has some good African American friends here and everyone works well together. I don't think that there are many racists here anyways.

I'd point out that the former mayor of Fairbanks was black, but he was caught in a graft scam or something. But, just so you know, he wasn't singled out. They put away 4 or 5 white guys here in the past 2 years for the same thing. There is a large population of blacks in Fairbanks. Percentage-wise, there are more in Fairbanks than in Anchorage.

Racism is pretty much frowned on in Alaska, as far as I can tell. I have never seen it in any sort of situation. Hope you get the job. As far as I can tell, race isn't a major factor for Alaska Airlines.

Very cool! Thank you all so much. I have hope that i will be at home there. I can't wait to see if I get the job. Are there any other cities that you can live in and commute to Bethel? I wasn't able to find any apartments.I will try craigslist and see if i can find anything.

Commute to Bethel from other villages is by 4-wheeler or snow machine, depending on the season. Oh, wait. You can go by skiff on the river. And depending on which side you're on, in summer, you'd have to go by skiff anyway. City is a term you can use on Bethel, loosely. Apartments exist, but are hard to line up. Warptman is the best contact here, for real estate in Bethel.

I personally have experienced plenty of racism in Bethel over my two year stay there.
