What I don't realize is why the rest of us have to be graced with this subject matter to begin with. Most of it has nothing what so ever to do with relocating or Alaska.
I seem to see more than three posts in this this thread that utilize complete sentence structure as well as refrain from name calling et al. Too bad that the post that I quoted isn't one of them.

The political climate of any given area is quite often a consideration of those who are planning to make a move.

Not according to the numbers. There are more registered Democrats than Republicans and together they add up to quite a bit - which means, most people in this country have a political bent one way or the other. The "middle of the road" are mostly those who identify themselves as "independents."

The lunatic fringe is quite small, on either side.
Fringe, by definition, is small (otherwise it wouldn't be called fringe). But smallness does not mean their impact is small. It takes only a few to wreak havoc on civilized society (think 9-11, think Oklahoma City bomber).

Don't forget the people that go from one side to another...When I renewed my license in December and was asked if I want to register to vote at the same time there were several categories to choose from...

And yes, fringe has nothing to do with impact when talking size....

Just because one is registered for a certain party, does not mean they are not a moderate. I stand by my belief that most people are middle of the road. I have friends in both parties, but they have more similarities than differences, much more than they realize. Alas, we could argue this until the end of time, and I don't have the energy.

Fringe, by definition, does not mean small. In the context I used it in, it's a noun. It describes something on the outer edge, margin, or periphery. That's why I felt the need to define the size.

I gave you the numbers, which suggest a measure of objectivity. You obviously have mysterious powers to divine what people actually believe by climbing deep into their minds. Unfortunately, I am not endowed with your gifts.

Merely rattling off the numbers of registered members of each political party means nothing. In some states, you have to be registered in one or the other to be able to vote in the primary, so people feel obligated to choose. Much to, I'd surmise, your horror, people switch parties all the time.

True, but as I explained in the earlier posting, I do not have your superior powers of divining other people's thoughts & feelings. Therefore, I will continue to rely on numbers and measured data in this lifetime, hoping for a better dispensation in my next lifetime.

What it comes down to is human nature. Most human beings crave the very same things. Political party affiliation is merely an afterthought to most, especially in good times. The rhetoric is quite charged at the moment, because the economic landscape is ugly. But, underneath it all, there's more common ground than glaring differences amongst the majority of us. Perhaps you don't see it. Maybe you've been hanging on the periphery too long...
