I know some of the companies they've approached about buying it. The salmon industry in AK is like a very small town in certain ways and word gets around fast.

What surprised me is that Target even sells food.

Wal*Mart buys/sells wild salmon, but I seem to recall some small scandal several years ago about them mislabeling product and trying to foist off farmed BC swill as wild Alaskan.

By the way, this is just wrong:

Walmart.com: Bumble Bee: Wild Alaska Keta Salmon, 14.75 oz: Canned Goods & Soups

This is dog salmon.

i'm glad that the fishery is sustainable by their definition- when i use the word "sustainable," i mean it in a more absolute sense. broken down, what it comes to is the ratio of the amount of calories used to calories gained in a particular endeavor. if somebody fishes using traditional methods for subsistence, they're not using much energy in comparison to the energy that they are receiving from the harvest. so for somebody fishing locally and feeding themselves with the fish they catch, it is a very sustainable endeavor, as salmon is a renewable resource and getting a large amount of it doesn't have to take much energy. if somebody is to fish commercially (using boats, a crew, machinery, a processing plant) and then ship their catch thousands of miles away, the amount of energy spent will greatly exceed the amount of energy gained from the food in question. and when a large portion of this energy comes from non-renewable energy sources, this is not sustainable in the long run.

anyhow, this is old news to most, i just wanted to clarify, especially because it is central to why i think subsistence is great (very sustainable) and shipping salmon to florida (or wherever) is not.

Keta salmon is the wild Alaskan salmon that Target sells. Not canned, but frozen fillets. It's not very tasty...

Not really...but I'm sure they are not exactly choice pieces of fish, either.

I know that they have some sockeye, some smoked coho, and have approached Trident about buying more coho.

But keta...that is dog salmon, and no, it isn't very good. In fact it's a bit disturbing that they're selling dog salmon as people who eat it will not get a very good impression of Alaskan salmon.

There are only a few ways to make dog salmon even slightly palatable; teriyaki seems to cover up some of the bad taste.

It's called dog salmon for a reason. It isn't good for much besides crab bait.
