We don't even fish for chum, I don't think I've ever ate it before. We get kings for drying, reds/cohos for smoking.

But keta...that is dog salmon, and no, it isn't very good. In fact it's a bit disturbing that they're selling dog salmon as people who eat it will not get a very good impression of Alaskan salmon.

There are only a few ways to make dog salmon even slightly palatable; teriyaki seems to cover up some of the bad taste.

It's called dog salmon for a reason. It isn't good for much besides crab bait.
Actually, I was so disappointed with how it tasted that I looked up the variety "Keta" and indeed discovered it was considered dog salmon! Funny 'cause I gave the rest to my dog. I was just at Target this evening and that's the only kind of wild salmon they had available. If I didn't know what good salmon tasted like I would never touch the stuff again, so yes it is a pity that that is what they sell.

It is very hard for me to fathom that there are people who will pay good money for dog salmon.

Trident no doubt is behind this. They've been aggressively trying to market their dog salmon for a couple of years now.

What Target were you at, melbern? I thought you lived in Bethel.

Leave it to freakin' Trident to sell dog salmon to the lower forty eight. They even have it in Costco.

If that is going to be what Target mainly sells you won't have to worry about the subsistence issue, bortstc.

granted, it's year-old silver salmon, but he eats well compared to most.
