The much, much bigger expense in NY will be property taxes, unless your buying tons of cars or other huge items. For most people, the sales tax difference of 1/2% is nothing.

Sales tax varies by county as well. It is 8% in Onondaga County, if I'm not mistaken. Some counties in other states approach 10%, if not go over.

Look at median home prices as well, as many times they can be higher in other states and housing makes up the biggest amount in terms of costs, in plurality(about 30%).
