Hi all. Looking to relocate from Long Island to upstate NY, possibly to a job in Albany or Schenectady (Capital District) or the surrounding areas. I work for the state and am looking to transfer to a job up there.

From what I've seen on craigslist, apartments seem plentiful. I'm a single 34 year old man, quiet, keep to myself. Looking to live no more than 30-35 minutes away from my job.

I guess the main questions I have are:

Are there any towns to avoid in terms of renting an apartment?
Which would be better to find an apt, craigslist or timesunion.com?

Thank you for any advice and information.

I would actually use both, some landlords really stick to craigslist, and some stick to the Times. (We found our current place in the Times- but! its nice because most landlords put an address on CL, so you can google streets view, as well as view pictures if the landlord puts them up.) Craigslist is updated more frequently than the Times of course.
There are definitely some areas of Schenectady, Troy and Albany that I would definitely avoid. Some areas that I wouldn't avoid, and would check out would be East Greenbush, Latham, Guilderland, and other surrounding smaller towns. The only thing you will find that's not glamorous outside of Albany, Troy, and Schenctady, would be poorer areas, but not dangerous. Good luck!

I grew up in Rotterdam N.Y., next to Schenectady.... Great town..

I recommend staying out of Schenectady itself... Crime + taxes..

Guilderland is also nice. I'm thinking about moving back there myself.. I live in Toledo, Ohio right now. I really miss beautiful upstate N.Y. --Even the brutal winters.

Hi there, me and my family left longisland to Move Upstate NY , where about a half hour north of albany .. The cost of living is Great, Schenectady i did hear a lot of crimes, but theres also some nice parts of Schenectady that run on the border of Niskayuna which is a nice place to live, look into the outskirts such as, colonie, latham, delmar the prices are reasonable there too, all depends on what youre looking for.. Its taking me quite a while to adjust as Longisland will always be my home = ) Unfortunately way too expensive to live.. But i go down to visit friends and family quite often which makes it alot better for us!! Good luck to you with youre move~~~

Nyskay is a nice area to live but Balltown rd is the busiest rd, at rush hour. count on 15 minutes extra time as crossing the Rexford bridge is slow! and traffic backs up on Balltown.

I found a great site today that rates apartments. I will list it , kinda like edmunds rates cars. I never know if that is ok to do, but here it is..

Apartment Ratings - Apartments for Rent with Ratings and Reviews from Actual Renters

good luck
