i would recommend some neighborhoods in albany and schenectady. Most people will tell you that these places are awful to live, but it is their ignorance that plays into your advantadge because this perception keeps housing prices very low in these areas. Of course, there are certain ares to avoid, but most of the neighborhoods, such as Union St., bellevue and GE realty plot in schenectady and anywhere west of washington park in albany have very nice large homes, spacious property with lawns, treelined streets and you can buy these homes anywhere between 100 and 250 grand. The schools are not at the top in terms of performance, but only because some students do not perform well. As far as the actual quality of education, schenectady has very good schools; albany, decent. people also will say that taxes are higher in schenectady. Yes, the tax rate is higher, but the actual taxes you pay will be lower as the assessed value of homes in schenectady are typically half of what they are in neighboring communities. i reccomend the city--better constructed houses, shorter commute times, all the benefits in terms of space and quiet the suburbs offer (in most city neighborhoods, which have more of a traditional suburban feel) at a much lower price.
