Too bad I can almost never afford it. I went to Burgundy for my honeymoon and fell in love with the wine. Amazing, intoxicating, ultracomplex. Since coming back to the US I've bought a few bottles in the $50 range but these were mostly disappointing. Only good ones I've had have been at tastings and those are 200+ per bottle.

Affordable: Rioja

Seems like 2005 was a good year. I have never been disappointed by dropping $20 on a reserva rioja from 2005.
I love my wines, but am far from a wine snob, so I don't really care within reason. I would have trouble with $20 for a bottle, but $10 to $15 is not too hard to take.

We do not have a truely favorite brand, we do have a favorite kind: Red, we love Pinot. White, Cab Blanc or Pinot Grecio for starters. Whatever, just make sure it isn't a sweet wine: If I want sweet I will have liquoir after dinner.

I do think about how our tastes are changing. I remember in the 80s everyone loved Chablis or Cab for reds, then it was Merlot and now we have moved away from Merlot and most people we know can't stand the thought of drinking Chablis.

Yeah, I've never had a white merlot and it doesn't sound very appealing. Never had a red wine from Chablis either...didn't know they used to be popular. That's why it's better to follow your own palate and not the trends. I have a lot of wines that I like for $10-15 but what keeps me interested in wine are finer wines. The wines that you can sip and enjoy over several hours and that are constantly changing and evolving while you are drinking. It's those types of wines that inspire a passion.

Whether I like my wine light, heavy, sweet, dry, whatever really varies depending on my mood, what I'm eating with it, if anything, etc.
