Phadia Announces First-Ever Commercial Availability of Peanut Allergen Component Tests | EON: Enhanced Online News
Our son has done immunothology treatment (food drops) since age 1 1/2. He is now 6. We make annual visits to Allergy Associates in LaCrosse Wisconsin, where we discuss his recent blood work and discuss allergy treatment strategies. Up until now, all blood work has told was his allergen level for each of his foods. This new component testing is fantastic and will tell us exactly what proteins in each food group he is allergic to.
Our son is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts. One of the great things about the new component testing offered is that each protein in each of the foods is broken down and you see which exact one(s) your child/yourself is allergic to.
Up until now, all we know he is allergic to peanuts and to avoid them. Same with milk, avoid all milk products. A study done at Johns Hopkins took kids who were allergic to milk and gave them baked milk products, such pizza/lasagna (where cheese is cooked) and cakes (where milk is cooked) and found out that 60 pct of those allergic to milk could eat baked milk good. This testing can tell us that (hopefully).
With peanuts, same thing. From the link above, there is one type of peanut protein which can cause anaphylaxis. Only about 20 pct of those diagnosed with peanut allergies are allergic to that protein preliminary studies have found. Our son would still be allergic to peanuts, but it wouldnt be life threatening. That doesnt mean he will start eating peanuts, just gives us a little relief knowing that if he came in contact with peanuts he would not possible die from them.
I encourage all parents of kids with food allergies to find out more. We did that and know so much more about food allergies than we began. Armed with knowledge, we help our local elementary school know what Jacob can and cannot eat and what precautions need to be made. We are the belief that no school can be peanut free, but with the right precautions he can be safe. We do not advocate peanut free schools, personally, as I as a parent am the one that must take responsbility in educating our child.
Anyway....as you can tell I am pretty excited about our upcoming trip on Aug 22nd.
