Hello. So ive got what I believe to be a sinus infection and is causing daily headaches. I've got constant pressure in my face and under my cheekbones by my eyes. Sometimes when I blow my nose, thick yellow mucus is discharged. I went to the pharmacy and bought that sudaphed, the kind where you show id to get. When I take it, the pressure lessens and the headaches all but go away. But they come right back after the 24 hour time period when the sudafed wears off. I work part time, my girlfriend was laid off last month and I cannot afford a doctors visit. Needless to say, health insurance is non existent for me sadly. NY help to get rid of this infection would be great. Thank you.

I used to have that all the time. Have you tried a neti pot? If you use it a few times a day it will help along with the Sudafed that you get from behind the counter. Also hot towels across your sinus area. You may need antibiotics to really clear it if it's a sinus infection. Ideally, you should be checked for allergies--environmental and foods--especially if this is chronic.

The neti pot is something you can buy in the drugstore--there's a simple plastic squeeze bottle type and you don't have to buy their mixture to use in it, you can just use boiled (cooled) water with sea salt or baking soda. Keep at it several times a day.

Hmm OK, thanks for the help. I've never used a neti pot before. I do have saline nose spray stuff. I have been using that. I don't think its making any difference though. I would love to go see a doctor and find out if I need antibiotics or not, but without health insurance, its not an option. I went to visit the ER last year for kidney stones. WOW!! I had a morphine shot and another shot I can't remember plus a urinalysis. $2700. That practically ruined me.

NeilMed Pharmaceuticals - Directions for use of NeilMed products

If only you could see a doctor but it sounds impossible right now. The neti pot has been used for centuries and my ENT even recommended it. He wanted me to try it before getting antibiotics.

Using it is sort of gross but it really works and I've talked to lots of people who use it with great results. You have to be very careful to be completely sanitary though. There are directions--like boil the water and let it cool down to warm, then add the sea salt or baking soda (or the package that you buy which is the same thing anyway.) My ENT had me doing it about 5 times in each nostril and about 3 times a day when things were really bad.

It will clean the junk out of your nose and help you to get some air through--and drainage. I hated doing it but as soon as I was done I felt better right away. Then I had to do it again a few hours later. Not fun but there's a really good chance that this could do the job. Then the warm towels on your face to loosen the stuff further and make you feel better.

It doesn't cost much at all, thank goodness. Maybe you should bite the bullet and give it a try if you can't get antibiotics.

Hmm, I was looking at the directions. Kinda weird. Is there any unpleasant side effects to using the neti pot?

I have kind of the same thing you have right now and I've had it for a month. I also have a low grade fever that comes and goes, which is starting to worry me. From experience most sinus infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria, so antibiotics will do no good. I've used a Netipot and I can't really say if it helps. It feels good for a little while after since you blow out all the junk in your nose but you soon get congested again. You also have to be careful to now blow too hard when using a netipot, which is what I think I did. I think I blew too hard and made my sinuses worse. For me a netipot hasn't been a big help but I hear they help other people so I'd give it a try.

Using the neti pot isn't exactly fun but I've never heard of any side effects as long as you use sterilized water, your hands are clean, etc. Any sinus infection I ever had was caused by bacteria and the right antibiotic would clear it up in a few days. The neti pot would work if the sinus infection hadn't gotten really really bad. I wonder if there are any clinics you could go to for antibiotics.

I was thinking of Urgent Care. But when I tried them for when I had kidney stones they turned me away and told to go to the ER. It really does suck not having health insurance though.

I used to be the queen of sinus infections. One little sneeze would turn into like 10 and then it would go into a full blown infection. I learned that white foods like sugar, bread, and anything processed would trigger an attach. Once I got my eating clean, it improved. I also take Oil of Oregano (wild crafted) every day. It is an age old herbal remedy that is an anti-fungul, anti-bacterial remedy. You only need a drop or two and it does taste like an overly spicy pizza. But it works. There are also pressure points on your hands that you can do to release the headache. Feel better !

I'm just starting to get over a bad "something".

It started in my nose like a cold at first. Endless globs of snot in clear, yellow and green form.
Then it went to my chest and been coughing like mad and hacking up large globs of mucus and flem. All of that is almost gone now, but the last two days have been headaches and pressure behind/below my left eye and socket. Also my left ear....it's always draining liquid, pressure and wax off..way more then normal. It also pops too with air bubble pressure reliefs.

Don't know for sure what THIS is/was....but I've had it for like 2 weeks also accompanied by fever and extreme sweating. Just drowning in sweat out in the summer heat. Seems like gallons worth.

I'm glad I'm on the final stretch...I didn't take anything for it, just gutted it out.
