I've done acupuncture off and on for many years. Recent years after hip replacement and mess to knee and thigh. I found a holistic rheumy and she was able to bill insurance and it helped me walk better. Also helped with lumbar spinal stenosis which came on after hip replacement. What a mess it all has been.
Thru other online health friends I was told about self acupuncture and looked up all that info and thru a CD friend bought needles and do my own acupuncture mostly on the knee and leg of hip replacement. Every spot on my body has pain but I can just rearch so many areas. It's easy and it does help to keep blood flowing in the pain areas.
wow, what a good price you had in New Orleans.
Glad it works for you.
In NJ I paid $70. for 45 minutes, and I discovered that was low. Other places charge $125.00.
I went 5 times to this practitioner and stopped. The second time I also fell asleep on the table and was so relaxed all day and slept 'like a baby'.
(I had gone for insomnia).
but other times were not as relaxing.
and I started to feel doubts about the practitioner - she was somewhat absent-minded- I always worried she would forget I was on the table and leave the office!
or forget to take all the needles out.
She didn't have any music, and if I didn't fall asleep, it was really boring lying there for 45 minutes.
I would try to put myself into a meditative state, ...without much success.
I am going to try it again, once I find someone.

Mine was actually not too bad cost wise. It was $25 for about an hour and a half. They do the needles and then let you lie and relax while the music plays. Then they came over an talked to you. I even got a sheet with foods that are good for anxiety. I do think it gets exacerbated by my diet.
I am currently in New Orleans and in the process of moving to DC. I am sure it will be lots more expensive there! I am going to try and do it once a week.
I have been getting acupuncture treatments for a neck and back injury and the treatments have helped tremendously. I was at the point where my doctor wanted to try cortisone shots but acupuncture was the other option.
While I have no idea how much it costs since my insurance covers it, I have seen Groupon coupons for acupuncture.
wow, you are very fortunate to be covered by insurance.
I am on medicare - no coverage.
altho they do cover sleeping pills!
Thanks - I already exercise plenty every single day (walking, biking and yard work) and eat a healthy diet. I am on no meds right now and glucose is dropping steadily. I am doing far better than when I was taking the Metformin, which made me sick and did very little to bring down my numbers.
Anyway, I am satisfied with the acupuncture and highly recommend it - it can help with a lot of things, especially pain management.
I think your practitioner may well have been inept. My understanding is that one should never feel any pain when the needles are inserted or during the time they are in place. Perhaps a tingling or nerve frisson, but not actual pain.
I had treatments for six weeks for occipital nerve entrapment and experienced no pain during or after the treatments and by the end of the six weeks, the original nerve entrapment pain was completely resolved.
I'd spoken of this in my earlier post, #14, don't know if you read that.
I agree. I once went for a while to a practitioner - I never felt any pain.
The one I recently went to - I did feel pain, and I realized I was dreading going to my appointment.
So I have stopped, and am looking for another one.
I think if there is any pain, you should change acupuncturists.
It took over a year for all the specialists I saw to come to the same conclusion as the very first one I saw. He was an acupuncturist....super smart, and he pinpointed which nerve coming from my back was being pinched.
Too bad(for me) none of the other Docs seemed to care what he knew....I was still pretty well forced to have another ton of diagnostic tests to prove what the acupuncturist saw right from the start....
I asked several doctors why I am always thirsty, drinking water, and then urinating.
(I don't have diabetes.)
I never got any answers.
then this acupuncturist had me stick out my tongue, and said I was low in potassium, and that was why I was always thirsty.
I haven't yet done any research, or tried potassium.
But I am impressed with the diagnostic tools of Chinese medicine.

I went to a clinic in our town for a while and they had reduced rates and especially for seniors. After that I decided to learn it for myself for some of my issues. I have time, so why not. Check for clinics in your area or a school that offers treatments.
Is everyone aware of caffeine consumed. That alone is huge with sleep.

I went to an acupuncturist for a couple of years. I have an acute case of needleitis and would pretty much tense up before the needles were put in-especially when she would put it in one certain spot in my foot that ALWAYS hurt. Once they got in, I didn't feel them and was able to relax.
She really helped with my TMJ issue-that I had most of my adult life. My jaw doesn't pop as bad as it used and doesn't hurt like it did. However, she did absolutely nothing for the major hot flashes I have had for the past several years now. She even gave me some Chinese herbs-that didn't even work. I stopped going to her because if it wasn't working, why pay the $$. (She charged $60 an hour). But, I did feel relaxed after.
hello,
and if i may respond to what you did not ask for advice on.
don't know if your hot-flashes are related to menopause -
when I went thru menopause I had major hot flashes.
I tried every herb and supplement to no avail.
And then I read that in Japan, they have no word for 'hot flash'-
I changed diet - I cut way back on chicken, and ate more tofu.
(Back then I didn't know the concerns with tofu)
and the hot flashes vanished.
(I think the antibiotics and all the other crap in chicken had really exacerbated the hot flashes.)
