lmao there's no dispute. "America" is understood to mean "USA" in all G7 countries, among English speaking people. The Canadians don't call themselves "Americans", they call themselves "Canadians", the Mexicans call themselves "Mexicans", not "Americans". Until one of the lesser countries in Central America or South America rises to G7 status and then starts trying to refer to themselves as "America" (which is never going to happen), there's no "dispute".
Just people who wish their country were a G7 country expressing their jealousy. lmao @ this thread.

There is no dispute according to you, but not everybody thinks a country has to achieve G-7 status to be able to have a voice.
And to think other countries are jealous of you it's quite ridiculous. That's blind zealous nationalism. They are not jealous, they just don't like you because of all the stereotypes that people like you who call other nations "lesser countries" keep propagating.
Germans are Germans (nationality) and Europeans (continent) because there is a continent called Europe. Since there is no continent America, Brazilians can't be Americans. They are South Americans. Citizens of USA are Americans (nationality) and North Americans (continent). Is it this hard?
"America" does not exist. There is no country called America anywhere on Earth.
No matter how much we debate and argue this, the vast majority of the world will STILL call citizens of the USA Americans. Not "US Americans", not "United Statians" but Americans. This isn't something everyone has to like or agree with because that's how it is!
You can have your own opinions but you can't have your own facts. The truth is not a democracy and does not care what you believe.
When I have asked people from the UK where they are from, they have never said British. They always say English, Scottish etc.
If someone says they are English, Scottish or Welsh or Northern Irish is different than someone from the US talking about the Queen of England or calling the country English. The native people are identifying with their constituent country, but an outsider should say British when referring to an aspect of the entire country.

I appreciate that most of the people in the world use American as synonymous with people of the USA. To argue differently would be uneducated.
But the objection to the co-opting of the denonym (in Latin America) goes back centuries. The objection has been largely among the educated, so there is no reason to point out that many Latinos use the term Americano.
I am not advocating a world wide cleansing of the word from the languages of the world. I use the word too. If you read my original post, I was clearly bothered by the need to belittle people for making the statement. If someone raises the point, you don't have to tell them they are idiots and they can't call themselves Latino, because Latin is dead language.
Now if someone refers to the American Southwest as Aztlan then you have an objection. While no one can say conclusively that Aztlan was not in the Southwest, it was not the primary focus for archaeologists. The use of the term for the Southwest USA was clearly adopted as a political statement.

With all this being said, especially the part about this going back centuries, what is being accomplished?

Hmmm...so if people do not agree with your opinion, they are uneducated? Your statement is not only arrogant, but also uneducated.
