My partner and I are going to Panama in January 2017. Are there any updates on things going on that we should be aware of?

Our trip will be primarily focused on birding/nature, but we plan to arrive a few days early so that we can see the Canal, Panama City's Casco Viejo, etc.

The U.S. State Department info puts a lot of emphasis on crime in Panama, but is it really so pervasive? Sometimes these warnings seem a bit overblown. Our birding tour involves a few days in Darién, which the State Dept. warns against, but it seems that many other travelers, including North Americans, have successfully visited the region. I know that tourists can minimize problems by employing common sense and not being flashy, but is there anything else to be aware of?

From what I've read, gay travelers should try to be low-key, etc., which is understandable. Any advice in that regard?

We're looking forward to the trip, and wish we could stay longer than just a couple of weeks.

Well get in contact with me before you actually come to Panama. I will be free around that time, so, I can help you out with what you want. About your comments, you have already said it all, most of it is overblown, of course, there are some places that you may want to avoid, but other than that, it is a very safe place. Something else, you don´t have to go all the way to Darien in order to see birds, we have them all over and in the middle of the city, we have a huge national park which is mostly wild forest.

About your being gay, don´t worry about it, we have them here too and it is pretty well tolerated in Panama, of course, as long as you are not too openly about it, nobody will bother you.
