In Anchorage, there are two major ISPs. ACS - Alaska Communications and GCI. ACS offers DSL and GCI offers Cable Modem service.

I can't tell you about the reliability of ACS. I'm out in the Mat-su valley, north of Anchorage and they don't have ACS Home Internet out here. For what it is worth, I'm using GCI and it's been very reliable. My only complaint is the bandwidth caps.

Here are the some details for each companies offerings:

Alaska Communications

10 Mbps -$109
7 Mbps - $99
4 Mbps $89
3 Mbps $89

GCI - GCI

I'm researching into the idea of using these internet streaming box like "Roku" to replace cable TV...Roku website recommends the speed of 1.5mbps for best result...but with a limit of usage from GCI, I'm not sure if we should just get cable TV and forget about Roku...

this isn't really correct. I just paid 24gigs of overage with GCI at 8$ a gig...

and their packages do not come seperate from cable TV and phone for that cheap.

internet is expensive up here.

Carr's, Fred Meyer and McDonalds all have free internet. I'm sure there are some other places around town but these are closest to our house. I use them when I need to upload or download large files. Best to go mid-morning when most people are at work or school.

I believe in my post I did say "discount of bundled services"

Current GCI rates are here: Internet Plans & Features | GCI

Rather than paying $192 for the overage, assuming 8$ x 24, wouldn't it have been better to just pay an extra 10-30 dollars to jump up to a higher download rate cap? I get an email as soon as I hit the 90% level. If it looks like I will bust the cap, I call them up and move to a higher plan.

yep, that would have been the better way to do it... it's not my plan & I don't pay for the internet here; the land lord works for GCI so we get everything "free" at this residence.

Oh well, live and learn...

Keep in mind also that some locations are not serviced by both ACS or GCI. Sometimes you don't have a choice.

We have used GCI because it was all we had available to us in that part of town. We were on the unlimited internet plan that we got 4 years ago and continued with it because we were grandfathered in. However, they started up the "fair usage act" which limits the unlimited plans. (GCI's grand loophole) and if you went over what they deemed fair, they cut off your internet. We had the cable/phone/internet package too, with the fastest internet speed available. Paid HUGE money for it, I think $250 a month.

We have since moved and in our new location, we have access to ACS. Because they are the ONLY company in town with truly unlimited, we decided to give them a try. We got the 10mbs speed (? not sure, I'd have to ask DH) and pay about $99 a month but there has been a credit the past few months so it's only been $60. We run internet all the time. Netflix, Xbox, Playstation, Computer...... We do it all at the same time too. It's fast and never had any issues with the internet at all.
