Hello everyone!

I'm moving from Florida to Anchorage for work next month, should be there at the beginning of August (CAN'T WAIT!!!) also please don't hate me, I've already read a few people's grumbles at 'new folks' I promise I won't gloat and be one of those touristy new people who goes around calling himself a purebred Alaskan, originally from New York and proud of it!

Anyway I wanted to ask about internet service up there. I could care less about cable as I'm moving up to work at the news station so I don't think I'll need cable, never watch it anyway. Here in Orlando I pay $70 for 20mbps download speed. and I think thats waaay too much. I looked on Welcome to Alaska Communications
and saw they charge $109 bucks a month for 10MBPS?!?!?! I had to get help picking my jaw up off the floor. I need super fast internet for the type of work I do, uploading and downloading videos and files, and I think that 20 is too darn slow and was thinking of upgrading to 50mbps at $90 per month until I was offered this job. Plus of course since I don't have cable I love my HD Netflix streaming and gaming...

Am I just reading something wrong here? is there a joke I haven't been let in on yet or what?

Can anyone share their internet stories with me?

Great forum btw!

whoa ok, so I read around a little, I guess this is the norm for up there, still seems insane to me but it is what it is. I'm wondering now though, maybe its better 'quality' internet? like I may be only getting 5mbps, but for some reason its just as potent as 20mbps... reading that back to myself it sounds really stupid :P like we're comparing unleaded gas with premium LOL

check out gci.com I think is the website, but ACS is not capped but it's DSL, If you go to GCI it's faster but for what you want I think it will be like $200 a month and you are capped at 500GB a month. We have a nice monopoly here. I have 15 mbps/1mbps and it's $60 a month.

I was looking at GCI and I think I'll end up having to do the exact plan you have, its just weird to me seeing on their site they say you can do all these amazing things at once with no lag at 5mbps when in my house now with one other person streaming video both of us get crappy SD resolution at 20mbps... something is fishy here :-/

yeah, it's basically a monopoly that they have, And if you notice too it only says up to blah blah speed anyway. And I think depending on what part of town you are in GCI isn't even that great, I think at Elmendorf which is a military base here, they have lots of problems there. If ATT or Verizon or another cable internet company or even cable company would come up here, they would at the very least get 50% of the market I think.

No, but I think you can order anything from them online or over the phone.
