Have a safe drive up. I lived in VA Beach (went to Salem HS) for a few years before moving here. Was just down in VA for the holiday.

Hi, everyone -
Well we are in Haines Junction, Yukon Territory. What beautiful scenes! We will be crossing into Alaska today on our way to Tok! Friends are telling me about the icy rain weather moving through so we will be extra careful on the drive today.
The drive between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake: wow. We saw caribou, bison, and moose all along the roadway. Got some great photos! And some not so great photos since we were moving in the van and didn't stop, so had to take shots through the windows. The advise to not drive this stretch of road at night was very good advice. Also, the advice to stop at each gas stop and top off the tank was also good advice. Thank you to all who advised us about the journey and what to expect.

We will be stopping in at Tok, and you know we gotta eat at Fast Eddies! If anyone in Tok wants to stop by, we will be there later in the afternoon/evening timeframe. We have a blue conversion van pulling a Uhaul trailer (can't miss). We still out like a sore thumb, lol.

ThatguyinAK: I know of the Salem HS, my kids went to Ocean Lakes HS over by Oceana base/Dam Neck base area. I hope you enjoyed your holiday back east, lol. My son (who is still there) is saying that the weather is weird... 70 degrees F one day and 30s the next day. The weather shows that snow/rain mix will hit that area today and into tomorrow.

If anyone can advise us on the road conditions going across the border and down into Anchorage, could you please email me and let us know, please. (thepenartist@yahoo.com)

Well, almost there!

Awesome... Glad to hear you made it. I see you saw the same animals on that stretch of road I did in the summer.

Former Virginia Beach resident turned Alaskan here! Timberlake/Green Run area here. Welcome to Alaska and congrats for getting out of Hampton Roads/Tidewater/whatever the hell they call it now because there's no regional identity there.

32 and overcast in Anchorage right now.

I'll be making the same drive some time next year. I'm leaving Barrow and moving to Anchorage and need to get my car and the rest of my stuff out of storage from Virginia Beach to Alaska.

Check at 511.alaska.gov for road updates. If you use Twitter, you can follow them there. We've had ongoing freezing rain and heavy fog the last few days. Just watch your speed and you'll be fine.

We moved to Anchorage from Roanoke last summer. But we took 20 days to make the drive and stopped at the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Glacier Natl park. We definitely made an adventure out of it. A trip to remember for sure. Welcome to Alaska.

Thanks, everyone! For all the words of wisdom!
We stayed the night in Glennallen and are 160 miles from Anchorage. The Mat-Su facebook page reports: dense and freezing fog, with reports of black ice on the Glenn and Parks highways; visibility is less than 1/4 mile; light snow on top of ice on the roads.
Soooo, we will wait here at The New Caribou Hotel, unit the sky lightens up and then drive slow and cautiously into Anchorage.
Will get into the apartment today (Yipee)!

Hi, Wynternight!
I am grateful to be out of Virginia Beach. Was stationed there, then hubby retired and we stayed so the kids could graduate with friends. So now, our it is time for our dreams to happen!
We were going to make the drive to Anchorage next summer, but I was able to grab a job within the last 3-4 weeks, so I didn't have the time to stop and see the sights on the drive up, have a timeline to start the new job!
I look forward to hearing the new life I am embarking on, in a totally different "world". So far, I a have enjoyed the drive (though a long one), and I know that there is a lot I need to learn while here.

Would like to hear about your "discoveries" between life in Virginia Beach and Alaska.
