We are looking to make a big change and move to Alaska. I know there are a lot of hurdles. We are used to hard work and believe we have what it takes to be successful in AK. Previously we intended on moving to ID from TX but found the job market in ID to be lacking. We loved the state. Searching the AK job market was surprising. I am in IT and towards the higher end. I have seen many jobs that I can do and several that are almost perfect matches. So we feel good about that. We have homeschooled our girls from the beginning and will certainly continue. My wife really enjoys attending a homeschool group once a week here. I am not sure if they exist in AK. I would be shocked if they didn't. We are looking around the Anchorage area. We will be about an hour or so from Anchorage (most likely). Are there homeschool groups that meet regularly in the area?

So are you living in the Valley (Wasilla, Palmer, Houston)? If so, you'd want to look for homeschool groups in the Valley.
A couple of different friends of mine home schooled their kids and I know they were a part of a group that had regular activities. There's a lot of home schoolers in Alaska, and especially the valley.

We haven't decided exactly where we want to be. We do know we want a few acres and to not be in a city limit. We want to be able stretch our legs a little and not be directly next door to someone.

The Municipality of Anchorage covers a large area. It's outlined in red here: http://www.muni.org/Departments/OCPD...s/vicinity.gif

So you'll be looking at being in "The Valley". The cities of Palmer and Wasilla have relatively small footprints, so finding property that is not in city limits will be fairly easy.

And for reference, here's the city boundary map for Wasilla:

And for Palmer: Palmer, AK :: Boundary Map and Geodata for the City of Palmer in Alaska, U.S.A. :: MapTechnica

And another view of Anchorage's city limits: Anchorage, AK :: Boundary Map and Geodata for the Municipality of Anchorage in Alaska, U.S.A. :: MapTechnica

When you get ready to look for property, the Alaska MLS site is a great resource. Use the "Advanced" tab and select Matanuska Sustina as your search area.
