rntim - Currently, it's 90F with 75% humidity here today. Heat index might hit 100F. I can't even get my house below 78F right now, the A/C hasn't stopped running all day. (One of the reasons I want to get out of here)

You got me, I over prepare. I also bring flares, a fire extinguisher, spare parts and tools to fix whatever vehicle I am in too. I've even helped a few people out on the road, because I had what they needed to get back ON the road. Or at least I left a couple of flares so the next person going around the corner or cresting a hill wouldn't run into them...

Plus, I know I am being really bad here, I also bring extra meds, including several epi pens and glucogon shots. I;m stocking up now, by getting a refill every month too. Even though I am not planning on getting stung by something or the wife going hypoglycemic and going unconscious. To me is just makes sense to prepare for a potential emergency, even though, chances are, you won't have any.

I just post my thoughts and what I do. Take it with a grain of salt. I know at times we over prepare - but that's just us. We have literally ZERO cool weather clothing, much less clothing to survive below freezing. I can't remember the last time I wore a long sleeve shirt or pants. It just doesn't get "cool" or "cold" here. In the middle of the night the lowest temp this past winter was in the 40's and by the afternoon back to 60F+. Two days later we hit high 70s. That was winter. Broken Angel can take what I say and what every one else says and make his/her own decisions. If I am driving and going thru areas that can get below zero. I am making sure I have something warm enough to wear outside for a long period of time - just makes sense. I've driven the route before. No cell service for hundreds of miles, who knows how long help is from you. Hopefully someone comes by to at least call for help for you. I seem to remember a CNET executive getting killed going out for a drive and broke down in the snow. Now of course, the wife and kids stayed in/near the car. burned the tires on the car, and lived...

Another thought--have you put any thought into taking the ferry up? My missus is a "take a picture" freak...the last time we moved back up would have taken us like weeks cause I would of had to stop like every 20 min. to "take a picture!" She took ten zillion pictures on the ferry and I got to just enjoy the ride. I think it was like 1400 total but we had a cabin and all the comforts. Other folks "roughed it" and some folks even had tents set up on the rear deck. The ferry stopped frequently enough to resupply food(expensive on the ferry). We drove from Key Largo to Bellingham in 4 days and then 4 days on the ferry. We've done the drive from Anchorage down to the lower 48 and back up again but Canada was just too much hassle this last time. Passports, umpteen documents for the dog, firearms, etc. Plus I really didn't like going thru Edmonton anymore, and I lived there some years ago! That place is totally nuts!

We won't be driving (at least the girls and I won't, my husband may) I just like having stuff on hand. Seems easier to pack an extra couple boxes than deal with getting off a plane and immediately going shopping. I think after the flight I'll be at my limit for managing monsters in public lol Seems that most of the ski/outdoor shops here are clearancing everything right now too so I think if I look to avoid cotton and pay attention I can at least get necessities. Shopping will be a huge project since the toddler wanted a jacket at her cousin's tee-ball game in 85deg weather last night...

I agree Dakster. The potential negatives to being over-prepared are FAR fewer than those of being under-prepared.

More chain store garbage to fit right in with the soon-to-be outlet mall right across C street.

I took what you said earlier with a grain of salt. Just stating why I said what I did and why I do what I do... It's all good. Edmonton is kinda crazy - but you are not in it for long. Atlanta, GA is worse though. I try to avoid that city at almost all costs.

I don't live too far from Key Largo, and I have driven to AK before. I'll be driving up at least twice this time. Once to get my wife and her car there, get setup. Fly back... And then again to get my truck and our stuff there after I finish selling the house down here... I'll ship my guns (or if I have to do a flight up for some reason, I'll use that flight) and no animals. Already have passports and in fact renewing the kids passports, since they expire this July.

Thought about the Ferry - but seems cost prohibitive. Although if I can take additional time, I might, since I have friends in Seattle.

Flying and not driving changes things Broken Angel. I would still get a couple of warm clothes to wear in layers. And keep the young ones warm. It wouldn't be good to step off the plane and for some reason it's in the 30's out and all you have is a t-shirt... FWIW, the ten day forecast for Anchorage shows highs in the upper 50's to upper 60's and lows in the upper 30's to 40s... Trending towards the colder of those ranges LATER in the forecast period. And I don't remember if you posted the Month you are moving...

To put things into perspective, July is the "hottest" month in Anchorage. The RECORD high is 86F and the record low is 40F. Avg. is 65 and 53. Which the average for us, living in South Florida, is on the nippy side, I am sure for Alaskans it is down right hot.
