If you enjoy living in NYC, say NO. I'm being honest. You will be bored to tears even in Anchorage if you don't enjoy the outdoors, fishing, hiking, shooting, 4 wheeling etc. If you enjoy going out city life, Anchorage isn't the place. I haven't lived in NYC, but have lived in SF...the West Coast version of NYC. If you are looking for that kind of change, you may really like it here.

Hey everybody thanks again. Alaskapat you are a fountain of info. I'm thinking of keeping my furniture (I carefully picked it all out; it's not a lot but it suits me) as opposed to buying new, but shipping costs will play into the final decision. As for Anc being different from NYC, yes that is a reason to move. I've lived in 5 different states and grew up in the woods of New England, so the change from city to country/small city won't be too new to me, but yes the climate and relative remoteness of the state from the lower 48 wil be new and take some adjustment.

Sounds like you are well on your way for going to Anchorage. I honestly don't think you'll have much of an adjustment...unless you don't like mountains and beautiful scenery. The summers will be a welcome relief from the high heat and humidity, although it was 83 here yesterday. But those high temps don't usually last real long up here. Winters...you'll get use to; stay busy especially when we get more darkness.

Shipping costs can be expensive since they charge for a certain amount of space whether you use it all or not; I'd get 3 estimates from moving companies.

So keep us posted and enjoy your trip!

I noticed a few posts back you were wondering about shipping costs. I came from OK to ANC. I shipped a Saturn Vue from Seattle about $1600 from OK it was $2200. I shipped 800lbs of household goods and that was $1,600. Then the plane ticket, and as someone already mentioned, remember your security deposits and whatnot. Plan as much as you can. I got here and had a few wrenches thrown in the works and I am still trying to recover 3 months later. I love it here. Beautiful is an understatement.
