To everyone - Thanks for your replies. I guess the milk thing took center stage here. I got that $7 figure off this blog, actually. I don't even use much milk - it was just a surprising indicator of what the cost of living might be in Anchorage.

It's good to know that I can get a decent place for $1350. I was looking in the range of $900 to $1200, based on the fact that I could find a really nice place in Pittsburgh for 2/3 of that cost, but I guess I'll have to look at higher-priced places.

I like my Yukon Jack over ice with lime.

What kind of communication problems will I have with the Native Alaskan population as a psychiatrist who wants to be able to understand my patients?

I am not an expert but from what I understand, culturally Natives are not very outspoken and may not seek counseling.

First issue will be convincing any Native Alaskans that they need a psychiatrist!! secondly...wow....need to do a lot more research on Alaska before deciding you just want to move. doesn't appear you have done much research or even visited.

A psychiatrist asking for advice, how much do you charge an hour? I'll give you some advice on Alaska, but it'll cost you...

Sometimes the employers just want to see you in person. That way they can make sure your not missing any vital parts. As we've learned this summer some seasonal employers obviously hire people without doing face to face interviews first.
