In Europe at the public swimming pools there's usually a steam room, sauna, cold-baths etc... (well.. at all the ones I went to from Italy to France anyhow).

Is there anything like that up here? The gyms here lists saunas, but I don't want to bake, I want hot misty steam.

The only ones I'm aware of are inside the hotels for guests. Alaska just a bit different then Italy and France.

The Captain Cook Hotel (I love that place) has a kick ass steam room. They are open to the public but I don't recall what the cost is.

When you say "open to the public" do you mean that just anyone can walk in without permission from the desk?

Yes, its down stairs. They have a gym entrance there (down stairs) where you pay to work out or steam or treadmill or whatever. Those who are staying at the hotel use their room card to workout, those of us who just like to go there for a workout pay. I suspect they have a daily rate, monthly rate or even a yearly membership. I had a local attorney friend who went over there 5 days a week and worked out. I only go when I am down in Anchorage.

Honey...good luck...Anchorage is not France or Italy...I think you forgot that when you asked...

I do think there has been enough mentioned to not try to expect or make AK into what you came from....or anticipate too much....you could be disappointed in the end...

None of us want France, but a steam room does feel nice.

I certainly agree a steam room feels nice! But to see France, Italy in the same sentence as Alaska is rather amusing...almost like looking for an outdoor pool surrounded by palm trees there...I guess some places just have all the amenities..
