Hay Apat,I might not live in Alaska but back in 05 I moved out of the Metropolitan Washington, DC area into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains here in southeastern Ohio and had enough common sense to know that the vehicles that my wife and I owned at the time were not suitable for this area during the winter,so we traded them in and got 4 wheel and all wheel drive vehicles, only common sense tells you that. Now y'all up there in Alaska, you have a good day and enjoy the snow,I know I am here,I'm watching it out the window....

In Ohio didn't somebody tell you that they drive all kinds of cars their like FWD, RWD, AWD, 4WD, as well as sport cars? Why would you do something so economically reckless like purchase two new vehicles when you didn't really need them?

I guess he needed someone to tell him what specific vehicle to buy for Alaska. Specific recommendations have been given, but he apparently chose to ignore them. It's true that any vehicle made can be driven in the winter here. What may not have been specifically stated is that some will drive better than others and that's really a matter of choice. My son drives a low profile vehicle and he has no problems getting around. Granted, he'll choose not to drive on certain roads if there's 6+" of new unplowed snow on them, but that's about it.

I've also seen many posts where posters are battling as to who has the worst winter drivers at their location. I think the Anchorage area was one of the places at the top. There's also been many complaints about the conditions of the roads and jokes about windshields and gravel roads.

Posters here try to give good information. If something is incorrect, others will jump in to correct it. There are also a lot of opinions here and you can take it or leave it, but don't say it's wrong just because you don't agree with it.

Thanks Apat,Yep all it takes is common sense, the Mrs. and I are enjoying watching the snow out the windows and have a nice fire in the fireplace......I guess Diablo should have made that move to Hawaii in 07,the only thing he would've had to worry about was which boat to get...

You know apparently you didn't read my post completely, I live in the Appalachian Mountains and the majority of our roads up here are not paved and in the winter time in order to get around up here in the mountains you need to have a four-wheel drive vehicle of some kind. The vehicles that I had while living in Washington, DC area were not four-wheel drive vehicles and would not be able to get around in these mountains in the wintertime, so common sense says, you get a vehicle that will and it was not a reckless expense, it was a necessary expense.

I normally (85%) drove a 2001 Escort ZX2...front wheel drive, unless there was over 4 inches of snow, at which point I would take the 4-wheel drive Dodge pickup. The car is low profile in my mind, but for maneuvering in reasonable snow I never had a problem. If the roads were icy (often in spring) I always took the car as in handled better on the ice and with the nutjobs on the road. I didn't go off-roading with the car, but we are on a gravel road that when breakup comes turns to crap...never got stuck. Our driveway is on a grade with gravel, needless to say even in the summer the truck always had to be in 4-wheel drive to get out. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!
