It was so beautiful outside yesterday - we went over to Kindcaid park to try ice fishing. Didn't catch any fish, but I happened to look up just as a huge bald eagle flew right over our heads - I had never seen one outside of the zoo - made my day!

That is so cool! Too bad you didn't have a camera with good zoom lenses at the time!

They are quite good looking birds The western part of my state is full of them. This one was fighting either it's mate or an osprey over a fish and the other bird took off just before I got this shot. It was on the Clark fork River. I took the shot while kayaking.

That is a nice picture rickers! No, we've never got the camera with us when we need it. You'd think I'd learn to carry it everywhere by now, since I'm still fascinated with the whole moose-in-town thing and other Anchorage oddities.

If you want to see a lot of bald eagles...head down to Homer. I have literally seen 100+ at the same time. Around Pier One Theater, you will almost ALWAYS see eagles perched or flying around. They are beautiful.

I was told that someone feeds the eagles at the VFW in Eagle River on sunday mornings. Not sure if this is true, but around noon a few sundays ago I drove by and saw around 6 bald eagles sitting in the trees. Pulled over in the VFW parking lot and got lots of great pics.

There are Federal laws against feeding Eagles because the Department of the Interior doesn't want these birds to become acclimated to humans. Until the last few years there was one woman in Homer who actually had the only Permit that I've known about that allowed her to actually feed Bald Eagles. Everytime I've been on the Homer Spit I've seen Eagles as has been mentioned. North of Anchorage there are places along several rivers where Eagles are abundant. In such places as Dutch Harbor Eagles are almost common. Since there are no trees in Dutch Harbor the Eagles nest on the ground, on cliffs and on what are called Priest Rocks along the coast. I see them in Anchorage frequently but I think the Ravens haze them so bad in this area they probably feel unwelcome. On the Keani Peninsular I've seen Eagles from Seward to Keani/Soldotna down to Homer and occasionally on the Kenai River along Sterling Road if you're looking for them. Beautiful birds and it's better not to try to get too close to them while taking pictures so they stay properly wild.

I usually see at least one a week on Base. A few weeks ago I seen 2 side by side in the trees just sitting there. I will miss the abudant wildlife that is here. I can't even count the moose I've seen. I know at least 5 of them have eaten our flowers right out our front door. And so far I have encoutered 3 black bear while doing my job. It's an amazing place that's for sure. What I won't miss are those stupid ravens eating the trash in the bed of my truck. I can leave it for just 5 minutes and they will have it everywhere.

Moral of the story after the first time..don't leave the trash in the truck...you could find a bear in there grazing
