so hubbie after 5 years here (retired military) is sick of the heat. we want to stay somewhere in AZ though but less heat and not so cold winters. phoenix is a nono cuz of the high crime. Im putting kid in private school so school wont be a big issue. we really want to be close to a military base.
we are just 5 miles away from marine corp base and love that! but the heat is what is killing hubbie.
thought of going to FL near tampa but i think AZ is just way nicer (less rudeness and more laid back)

any advice be great thanks

You might need to leave the state to get everything you want. San Diego would be perfect. Warm winters, pleasant summers, big military presence. You would need to head north in the state to avoid the extreme summer heat, and there is only a camp up there, in Flagstaff, and not a base. Also, winters will be quite cold and snowy.

What about Sierra Vista, near Fort Huachuca? I think summers there are milder than Tucson - and certainly Yuma - and it's a beautiful area.

Sierra Vista is a great little town, you should check it out, at least do a search on this site for information already posted/compiled....and certainly, Sierra Vista is considered "safe".

To eliminate the entire Phoenix area because of "high crime" is a mistake. The climate is still an issue for you, as it's not enough different from Yuma. There aren't any towns close to Luke that are at a higher elevation, though the outlying areas on the west side may seem somewhat cooler in the summer, especially at night. In AZ, Sierra Vista seems like the closest to the things you are looking for.
