God bless him, I guess it's time to say good-bye. It must be an awful decision to make to stop the treatment that is keeping him alive. I never really liked the man that much. Back in 2008, I truly disliked some of the things he said and did. But now, I feel really sad for Cindy, Meghan, and his other family, knowing that this is the end. My mother said at the age of 100, "It's too bad that people have to die." She wasn't talking about herself at that time. I think it was Bob Hope or Frank Sinatra. But truly, John McCain has had a wonderful, full life.

Personally, I think that should be a separate topic. I'd rather honor McCain right now. He will be missed by voters from both parties. RIP, sir.

It seems there are some who want to hijack the threads honoring McCain.

They have no honor.

Amazingly, his mother - Roberta McCain - is still alive at 106.

It's unfortunate that she lived to see the death of her oldest son.

I often disagreed with the Senator, but throughout a long life he was a public servant who gave a great deal to his nation. I salute both the man and his service.

Politics aside... he was a hero. Was a dedicated public servant who fought for what he believed in with no BS. Didn't just talk the talk, but actually walked the walk. AZ has lost a great senator. RIP.

I suspect it has to do with how vacancies are filled. I don't know about AZ, but in other states I've lived in, a resignation trigged a special election, which is expensive to the state. A death, however, allowed the governor to appoint someone to finish out the term, which is obviously less expensive to the state. I don't know it works here in AZ, but if it's the same, my guess is that's why he didn't resign.

It could also have been a very simple reason. Wanting to get well and return to Congress may have been what kept him alive so long. He may have seen resigning as giving up and giving in to the cancer. Many cancer patients try to keep working for just that reason. It's part of the fight.
