I am not bright enough to do a cost\benefit analysis on Cali vs AZ but I can say this. I was borne there in So. Cal, I was raised there. It was a wonderful place to grow up but it has morphed into a place I no longer can stomach.
My daughter and my new granddaughter live in So. Cal. Every time I go to visit them just reinforces my decision to leave there in 1988. High taxes, infrastructure is falling apart, crowded, rude and in many cases, dangerous. California just isn't the same place it was in the past for me. I remember the Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm of 40 years ago, of the all night bonfires on the beaches, of the uncrowded ski resorts. I remember driving out to Kern River and camping on the side of the road for some great trout fishing and so many other things that once made California the place to be. No longer. It's no longer "the place to be" for many, including me.
I breathe a sigh of relief every time I cross the border and see that "Welcome to Arizona" sign.

Nope - you still pay way more to live there as compared with right across the border in AZ. Higher gas by $1+ per gallon, higher car registration by about 400%, higher property tax - almost double, higher state income tax, etc. etc.....

This is about the politics that drive the prices....

But coming back the other way is great! We joke how the gas station signs in Blythe dont have advertised prices, but right over the border in AZ they stand tall, with California plates lined up.

Even that ugly in state desert starts to look much better shortly into AZ heading east from California.

We love AZ!

I lived in Oxnard, Ca for a few years due to my military service assignment, met my wife there. Her mother in Murrietta passed in 2018, so we moved her father to Prescott to assisted living then so he would not be isolated in all by himself, but closer to family here in Prescott. That took away any reason to go to southern California for us, havent been back since, and dont plan to. Ever.

Due to my job, I was required to live in a number of places around the U.S. including about 20 years in California, both North and South, prior to retiring here in Arizona.

I actually believe this Thread's Title should be reversed to "Why is everything so expensive in California?"

Of all of the places I have lived . . . California was always from 25% to 50% more expensive for everything. Nothing to do with Arizona.

Everyone I've talked to from CA say their main reason to move here in AZ is it's cost of living is much cheaper.

These factors (and millions more) are the reasons why the California side of that border looks like the TwiLight Zone.

I always curious about how gas stations in Blythe and Needles survive and stay in business charging around European-level gas prices while it costs about half off to fill up just east across the border.

I also like to ask what is the advantage if any of living by the California side as well?
