Politics aside, the vast majority of Taiwanese have absolutely no desire to become a dominion of the PRC. Maybe if things had gone down better between Hong Kong and China, things would be different now, but plenty of Hongkongers are immigrating to Taiwan now and bringing their anti-China sentiment with them. I don´t want to downplay all of China´s economic power, amazing infrastructure, etc. All that is great. Simply put though, Taiwan wants to stay defacto independent and the people generally enjoy their way of life. What would they have to gain by unifying with the PRC? Economic benefits? If you´re Taiwanese and want that, you just move to the Shanghai area and settle there.

The cultural differences between the PRC and ¨Greater China¨ are vast as well.

I personally would much rather live in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore or Malaysia (yes, I know that last one isn´t majority Chinese) than the PRC.

This is a "False" topic. As many fellow posters said, Taiwan (aka ROC) is de facto independent. Why does it need to declare independence? Independence from which country? Do they mean PRC? But Taiwan has never been a part of PRC. In advocating independence, the advocates are falling into the trap in tacitly admitting that Taiwan is a part of PRC!

And there are no obvious benefits in changing the national title from ROC to ROT. ROT can neither gain admission into UN nor establish formal relationship with US. The problem lies with Beijing.

Actually ROC passport holders have visa free entry into EU and US and Japan -- much better than PRC passport holders.

And obviously there are drawbacks in declaring independence.

For example, Taipei will most likely have to give up the islands of Kinmen and Matsu which are only couple of miles from Mainland China but hundreds of miles from Taiwan. These islands serve as important military outposts (Kinmen less so nowadays) for Taiwan.
