Young Mao's idea was very liberal and radical. He claimed that Hunan is for the people of Hunan. Hunanese didn't intervene in the business of other provinces and he expected vice versa. He even said that China, including Xinjiang and Tibet, should devolve into 27 countries.

If young Mao were alive today, most likely he would become a strong advocate of the Taiwan/HK/Tibet/Xinjiang Independence movement.

That was a failed coup event. In CCP’s minds that must be foolish too, by own youngsters. CCP has a long term plan for China, and not that easy, not even close. Also, that changed western view towards Deng Xiaoping after that event.

There was definitely power struggle between different factions of CCP over the event. One faction wanted to use the demonstration to purge the other one.

But to say that the student demonstrators were staging a coup is far far from the truth.

I still recalled in early May, 1989 that student leaders knelt down on the stairs of the People's Great Hall to petition to request meeting with the government leaders. In retrospect, they were somewhat naive. They assumed that the CCP leaders were as benign as the Song Dynasty emperors.

They had not studied CCP history thoroughly.
