Western China is more culturally interesting for tourists.
Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Urumqi, Lhasa, are all unique in their own way.
Interesting you said that! So true.
I recently went to the coast and visited Xiamen, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou. All good, by the way....but then I went to Chongqing and Yangzhou....loved those latter two!
My next trip traveling in China, I want to fly into Urumqi, train it to Xian, and down to Chengdu, Chongqing and Yangzhou again....such an interesting area.
Xi'an is definitely on my list. The only places I'm familiar with so far are Shanghai (very familiar with this city, have spent a total of about 2 months there), Hangzhou, and most recently went to a pretty nice mountain about an hour outside Hangzhou. But I'm real interested in going to Xi'an.
Now that we have completed the China portion of our travels I can say that the country really impressed me. I have been to China quite frequently the past 6 years but pretty much only to Zhongshan for a few days each time. This trip we saw quite a lot more of Zhongshan, as well as Zhuhai, Guangzhou and Shanghai. All very very livable places for us (of course with the caveat of daily life being very different than a relatively short visit) but these cities have good design and plenty of amenities to offer. I still feel extremely ill equipped to rank a top 5 favorite though.

What exactly separates these cities from each other? What makes you love those two?

Chongqing had rivers that cut through the mountains that gave spectacular views at night. Plus the way things were built into the mountains, it just had this always looking both up and down at something. Something about the layout appealed. There was also a little Ciqikou area of the city with a lot of tourism, some live music, and restaurants....which was an amazing little place to wander.
Yangshou is the area surrounded by those little mountains of limestone cliffs that just out of the earth. Plus the town also had a ton of live music, bars, restaurants, touristic things, etc.
I also really liked Shanghai and Suzhou and such....but they were flat and, well I liked them too. But Chongqing and Yangshou were my most memorable anyway.

I believe you meant Yangshuo, close to Guilin.
