But this forum isn't about the US, it's about Asia. Specifically China and Hong Kong. I do believe you hit on two important elements:
1.) Underreported crime - Absolutely, and more likely in Mainland China then Hong Kong because of the lack of checks and balances in the government structure for reporting. Basically, any type of facts or figures coming from that government are rubbish. Crime, economy...anything.
2.) Cultural - Is not so much Buddhism as it's not recognized by the government, but the legacy of that religion, the recognition of the homogeneous identity of the Chinese, and the cultural and communism focus on the collective society rather than individualism.

and I introduce a 3rd factor:
3.) Types of crime - Violent crime is low yes. Not so low are other crimes - corruption, human trafficking, domestic violence, drugs and prostitution, organized crime, scams. Those are huge issues in China and, like I said, underreported. Yeah I can walk down a street in a tourist area of Shanghai without getting mugged (usually), but I CANNOT walk down that same street without being propositioned by a prostitute, offers of fake watches, or attempts at scam. And yes, those are all crimes. Human trafficking is a serious issue in China, see below link
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_...cking_in_China

The Shanghai prostitution problem is even worse than most people imagine. Many of the brothel owners in that city have hidden cameras that record your "date" and then sell the videos to porn distributors world wide. Beware you may be on Candid Camera.

That was political. Not really the same.

Women seem to have a sense of security. No one would bat an eye at pajamas at 711, as long as they were clean.

thailand is more violent than foreigners think, im half thai born and raised here, 90% of farangs, think thailand has little to no violence, little to no street crime.

they can not read or write thai, so they can not see thai news.
they just assume when they see english thai news post a shooting or stabbing their reaction =

thailand is safe i have never seen or heard about no shooting or stabbing

omg this is something new, i think thailand have learned from Europe

violence is Western culture

despite thailand having more murders than Germany,France,UK,Spain,Italy and more European countries combined, and not to forget thailands nr 1 priority, is to keep the image of thailand clean, if you murder someone infront of tourists or do some crime, it is almost like you damaging the ''safe image'' of thailand is worst than the actual murder.

thai crime statistics is a mess, wrong and duplicated statistics for every region. thailand does not have same good level as crime collecting and statistics as first world countries, as police is the ones responsibly for that, and we all know what reputation among thais have about them.

thailand had/has higher gun murder rate than USA, and probably higher murder rate but hard to say because each different stats in thailand says different figures.

foreigner tourists and expats quite often get shot or stabbed, attacked in robberies.

dont get me wrong there is way worse countries than thailand, but it is the strange image expats and tourists have that is false, and they defend it no matter what has happend.

Gangsters or triads are all over Asia, but seldom involved with foreigners.
They are more organised and experienced in violent activities than the childish young HK violent protestors.
