Or, not only that, but if one’s ideas and lifestyle can’t bear scrutiny, then they are suspect.

It’s not at if there aren’t enough mainstream religions in the world. Why make up some new weird ones?
Mainstream religions are the same as the new ones, they have just become socially acceptable. Ask any Mormon.

All religion is the same. I'm always puzzled by Christians who divide religion up as if they're one of a kind, the only difference is social acceptance. That's it. It's all based on fantasy.

The “fantasy” brings comfort to many people. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

So do drugs, alcohol and nicotine. Hey! Some people get 'comfort' from abusing others.

It does, and if that's all the "fantasy of a God" controlling this world through ancient writings brought I might engage but we all know that the side effects of religion can be traumatic. When people start killing others in the name of fantasy, for example, you realize how crazy that social norm can become. Look at the Gaza Strip.

When "in the name of my God" is used to judge others, and becomes a weapon of beliefs, how comforting is that?

The way I look at it, we all need some kind of coping mechanism when the going gets really tough, or everyone would be throwing themselves under buses and jumping off skyscrapers (some still do).

If believing in a higher power serves that purpose for some people, I don't see how that is any of my business.

No, coping mechanisms are not necessary, especially ones that cause extreme actions and harm. Atheists don't need coping mechanisms such as religion and we're not throwing ourselves under buses etc. They say there are no atheists in foxholes and that couldn't be further from the truth.

Why do you need a crutch to help you cope when times get rough? Just breathe deeply and focus on the task at hand whether it be a death, loss of a job or any other number of things that can and do go wrong. It's not that hard to let go of an imaginary sky fairy - when has it ever done anything for you? Have you any tangible evidence to prove that it exists?

If there were a god (not the horrid bible god) we would all know and be aware of it. I freely admit I don't have all the answers but I know that believing in fairy tales is not the answer. But by all means pray, pray, pray to your heart's content if it makes you feel better. Just don't go shoving it down others throats and using it as a weapon.

I am not directing this at you OHNot4Me, it's just that it IS your business when that belief in a god infringes upon others and causes death and destruction, which is most certainly does and will continue to do as long as we allow it. So saying "I don't see how that is any of my business" is like saying you don't care what they do in the name of their precious deity - it affects all of us.

Religion is not completely harmless. Religion can destroy lives. My parents went off the deep end with religion three decades ago nearly destroyed themselves financially. My dad believes that some deity told him to quit his job to become a pastor, and my mom was gullible and religious enough to go along with it.
