Personally, I'm happy that Atlanta is being showcased as a city.

As a transplant from another country, I have friends that have absolutely no idea where Atlanta is located in the USA. The best way I can tell them the location of Atlanta (and Georgia) is by telling them it is just above Florida. I have even met someone who mistook Atlanta for Atlantic City, when they asked me about the casinos and how far NY was.

Now with television shows such as Walking Dead, Life as We Know It, etc. they are beginning to find out what a great city Atlanta is.

My friends are mostly foreigners who have no preconceptions about Atlanta, so they don't ask about how 'southern' it is, or what the population demographic is. Their main concern is what to do when they visit us (since Atlanta doesnt have the instantly recognizable tourist attractions). Then when they visit us (from either other US cities, or from other countries), they are impressed at the beauty of the city, the attractions it has to offer, and the quality of life.

Mountain Brook in the same league as Buckhead? Dream on.
They were absolutely correct, and you were not. The suburbs that they were referring to were quintessentially Old Money, and Dunwoody is not. Your laughter over such a situation was likely born out of insecurity more than anything else. I completely understand the cruelty of the College Caste System.

No, they weren't. Perhaps Mountain Brook and Myers Park are the old money neighborhoods of thier respective cities, but Buckhead is in a different league than both. Buckhead is in the same league as places like Highland Park, TX, and Georgetown, D.C., and to a lesser extent, Beverly Hills. Again, to find an equivalent to Buckhead, you have to lok outside of the Southeast. In terms of wealth and prestige, the equivalent of Dunwoody is about as high as it goes in Charlotte and Birmingham, new money or not.

And why exactly would I be insecure? I live in Buckhead, but I wasn't raised there. Also, let's keep in mind that I am from Atlanta and was educated at an exlusive private school. My crowd dominates the best fraternities and sororities at UGA, so even if there was a caste system, I would be at the top.

BBC - I really don't think attending an "exclusive private school" or being a member of any UGA frat or sorority is indicative of whether someone is secure or "at the top." Not saying whether you're secure or not. I assume you are secure. I've just met many folks that are very secure without those attributes and many folks that are very insecure with those attributes.

Reminds me of the whole "My dad owns a car dealership" schtick on Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Really, outside the the Southeast? Can't think of any comparably extensive wealthy areas of any other cities comparable anywhere else in the Southeast?

Also, Atlanta started attracted transplants immediately following World War II.
Everyone came from somewhere at one time. That means all Atlantans, since their descendants weren't originally from Atlanta. Back in the 1700s, Atlanta did not even exist. People who are the result of transplants back in the 1950s are natives today. The same can be said for any city.
