I work for Kimberly-Clark. The headquarters is right at Holcomb Bridge Rd. and 400 and I want to have less than a 30 minute commute to and from work.

I would be leaving for work at 6:30am and leaving at 4-5:00pm. I know that if I stay East of 400, south of Milton Parkway and West of Medlock (sp) Bridge, I should have less than a 30 minute commute.

So my question is what would be the commute times from the following.

Johns Creek
The Windward area north of Windward Lake
Duluth
Roswell and Alpharetta west of 400.

There seems to be more house for the money in these areas but I am wondering if I am setting myself up for a horrendous commute.

Where would the knowledgeable North Atlanta folks draw the line for less than 30 minutes to work.

Thanks for the advice in advance!

potentially all the areas you listed will be under 30 minutes. it really comes down to which house

ok except duluth which can be a stretch but it depends. city vs mailing address since it overlaps with johns creek to the north and west

Why not stick to Roswell? Either side of 400 isn't a bad commute and there are many nice neighborhoods with great schools. Best park and rec system in the state and beside the usual park amenities you have the Chattahootchee River and Nature Center. And, Canton Street is one of the best "scenes" in the metro area as far as restaurants, shops, galleries.

This!

From the viewpoint of a local resident, people contemplating a move to the metro area so often seem a bit perverse! I mean this kindly and I can understand how it happens when people do internet research on places to live. However there's a steady parade of posts on here along the lines of:

- My new/transferred job will be in A. How bad is the commute from P, Q or R? The lifestyle/housing/schools in those areas are great.

- My job will be in Q but I am certain I'd only like to live in A, B or X. How bad is the commute?

For A, B, Q etc. fill in almost any locales in the greater metro area. I've sometimes wished I could just play God and fix things for people so the people who actually want to live in Suwanee (or wherever) get the jobs there!

Seriously, OP, do look in Roswell first.

Thanks for the responses!

We would absolutely live in Roswell! The only problem we seem to have right now is that the houses we have saved online in John's Creek and North Alpharetta seem to be a little newer and nicer than what you can get in Roswell for the same money. Some of the houses in Roswell are remodeled, but many are not, and I do not want a project, I may only be in Roswell for 2 years before my company relo's me again.

It is not the area, it's simply the pool of houses for sale right now.

Please keep the responses coming if anyone else would like to chime in!

all of your location on your list will get you there in ~30 at 630a. You also should look at schools, taxes, other things you like to do and distance from those also,

What about home at 5:00pm? I think that is what I am most concerned with.

I like the Windward area because it is fairly close to 400, North Point Mall and Lake Lanier. I just have 2 small kids who I would like to see before they go to bed.

@ 5p about 20-30min Depending on the red lights, from work to Lake Windward. 530-6p you wll start seeing backup on 400, traffic will be in the 30mph range.

If your window is really potentially only two years, I would rent and not buy. I would be worried about recouping my initial investment, unless you purchase something way under TODAY's market value.

Thanks for the response and the concern.

There is a chance that I may decide to stay long term, but if I do choose to move again in 2 years, the company will relo. me again. No risk for me. Relo company will by the house.
