I am an Asian Woman and considering moving from NYC to Atlanta. I am looking online at the Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Alpharetta areas to live. I was told to look North of the city, because of safety issues. Will I experience racism in these areas? Is it ethnically diverse? I am also in an inter-racial relationship. My boyfriend is Irish and I am Chinese American.

Those areas all have considerable Asian populations, but the big-time Asian area of Atlanta is Johns Creek and Duluth. They are quite safe as well.

I don't think you'll have a serious problem with racism, no matter where you choose to live.

Those are all safe areas with a lot of Asians (especially Koreans).

I've never heard any specific instances of racism directed toward Asians here. You'll be fine.

I am Asian American and have lived in Atlanta since 1970. The city, as you can imagine, has grown tremendously. My parents use to have to get my cousins from Toronto to schlep ingredients to us whenever they came to visit us.

I live in the city and I feel perfectly safe and have not experienced any racism. My partner is Caucasian and I don't think we get funny looks. I will still get the very rare occasion comment of "you speak English so well". I try to take that as a compliment. I speak English without an accent (LOL)

Good luck with your move!

About 8 years ago, I was teaching a software class near Northpoint Mall.

There was an Asian-American gentleman from California that was SHOCKED how suburban and All American (not too Southern) and very nice the area was. He had been warned about staying close to the hotel and the racism he would likely encounter.

Sorry but I was rolling over in laughter about how these ideas get spread

You and your boyfriend will be perfectly fine here. I live in Sandy Springs and there are many Asians and interracial couples living here and all over the metro area. I am originally from New Jersey and I saw more racism up there than I have down here.

Yeah, it is funny how people in other areas have such ideas. My mother is Japanese, and before we moved to Atlanta from Seattle back in the 80's, people in Seattle were really concerned about our family. They had this image of klan members everywhere. I also remember meeting this realtor in San Diego about 8 years ago, and he asked if it was difficult for my mother living in Georgia.
