The last area of town I explored was more outside the core (East Point, College Park, Hapeville) which are nicer than many people think, but as far as in town, my list hasn't expanded any since I started the thread unfortunately. I'm definitely taking notes though and the map helps that much more!
Thanks again to everyone who has pitched in!

What is the distinction between intown and not intown?

I always thought intown meant "inside the city limits."

the definition i was going for with "intown" was historic neighbourhoods surrounding downtown and midtown that have their own "downtown" retail areas. obviously i left quite a few out that are struggling and don't really have much of a retail presence— capitol view, english avenue, etc.

One of the best ways to discover neighborhoods is to drive or ride a bus. I always enjoy taking the #2 from North Ave station, via Ponce and Moreland Ave. Goes thru Midtown, Poncey-Highland, Little 5 Points, and Edgewood. Route #36 is another good one, VA-HI, Morningside, Emory, Decatur.

From a historical standpoint intown Atlanta tended to develop northward. Once the streetcar line got to Buckhead in 1907 it was easy to commute downtown, and neighborhoods like Peachtree Park, Garden Hills, Peachtree Battle and Ridgedale Park became very popular. Of course the automobile soon made it even easier.

In the old days almost every neighborhood had a local retail center. A good many of them are still around.

Housing Stock as of 1940 - darker areas are older.
