[quote=arjay57;24425184]Oh, that's not true at all. Back when heavy metal was a big thing there was a huge outcry about it inciting violence, suicide, sex, drug use, and on and on. Many prominent people and organizations (including the national PTA) got involved and there were lengthy Senate hearings where artists and the recording industry were called on the carpet. This was the genesis of the "Parental Advisory" issue -- under pressure from the government and the public the recording industry agreed to put warning labels on music with "explicit" lyrics. A lot of stores even refused to sell such songs to underage individuals.

And don't forget the tremendous furor over rock and roll in the 1950s and 60s. Many songs and performers were banned from doing live shows or having their music played on radio and television. They often couldn't get recording contracts and stores refused to carry their music. There was even a bill in Congress to totally outlaw it in the United States.

The claim that hip hop has somehow been singled out for persecution is WAY off base. That's just not factua

In 2012 there is still alot of stuff that gets swept under the rug. Please dont act like it doesn't. Another thing in those days those Heavy Metal kids weren't labeled the way guys who appear to be in so called thug clothing gets labeled and profiled..

Music does not have to define a person. I know many people who listen to gangsta rap music, but have college educations, own a home, and have a 401K! Just as there are some meth cooking rednecks that listen to country or southern rock music.

I was sure that the parental advisory era of music was due to early 90's rap ala NWA, Gheto Boys, ect....I could be wrong but...

You are correct it began in 1985. The first hip hop album with it was released in 1987(Ice-T). There are many white rock bands that get away without using the sticker.

People in the Hip Hop or Rap industry are considered to be hood, thug, gangsta, etc. People in Rock are just considered alternative. People in Rock are not persecuted nearly as much as people in Hip Hop or Rap.

Thank you for that clarification. It is pathetic how people pull the race card when they are so oblivious. Al Gore's wife was the biggest advocate for the PTA, the upcoming movie/musical by Tom Cruise, Rock of Ages depict that era exactly.
