How renovations to Philips Arena will affect Atlanta Hawks seasons | www.ajc.com

In short:

-Philips Arena will close for renovation next summer, I'm guessing coinciding with the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
-Costs are estimated to be upwards of $300 million, and yes, the CoA will contribute some of that.
-The WNBA's Dream will play at Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion for the 2017 and 2018 season.
-No announcement yet as to where the Hawks will play during the 2017-'18 season, though I'm guessing it'll be at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

So glad they're renovating Philips instead of replacing it with something else, somewhere else.

As far as the location, development of the Gulch will be the ultimate game-changer. I did a pun there.

Also I wish they'd do something with that massive sea of parking that is the CNN deck. But I doubt it.

Ugh. I was hoping they'd be able to get this done without temporarily evicting the Hawks.....and with minimal cost to the city.

EDIT: Just read the article in full. Looks like the Hawks won't ever have to play elsewhere. It will be during the summer(s), like I originally thought.

Quote:
Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this year that the Hawks playing games away from Philips Arena while much-needed renovations are done to the facility simply is not an option. The major construction would begin in the summer of 2017 for completion in 2018, without any interruption of the Hawks’ season, for the 50th anniversary of the team’s move to Atlanta.

Do we know how much, and from where the city's portion is coming?

So glad to be spending public money to enhance a private company's place of business... ugh

However, I would be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy if this includes enhancements to bring in a minor league hockey team.

The place should still be able to host NHL hockey, shouldn't it?

Having viewed many different events at Philips Arena, I still cannot see why it needs a renovation.

C'mon, that is all you have?

Where is the vitriol and anger?

You were mad Cobb, a place you don't even pay taxes, used tax payer money to build a new stadium. I certainly figured you would be a little more butthurt about this classic example of sports welfare.
