Hawks, Reed discuss Philips Arena rehab; locations for new arena | www.ajc.com

Quote:
The Atlanta Hawks are eyeing three potential locations for a new arena, including the Civic Center, according to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

In addition to the Civic Center, a city-owned property that Reed put up for sale in recent years, the team is also considering an undisclosed Atlanta location and rehabbing Philips Arena, the mayor told reporters on Thursday.

Reed said he’s met once with the team’s new owners and repeated his willingness to consider a deal involving the use public funds. The mayor first indicated that option last year in the wake of controversy involving the team’s previous leadership.

“What I’m willing to do is come to the table with a plan that makes sense and is fair to the people of Atlanta,” Reed said. “I’m not closed to participating in a reasonable plan to make sure that the Hawks remain in the city and that’s what I expressed in our meeting.”

What's up with these new arenas for the Hawks and Braves?

Turner Field is less than 20 years old and Philips Arena just opened in 1999

There is nothing wrong with Philips Arena. It is currently one of the most successful event venues in the US.

Oh here we go again... These professional sport franchise owners always wants something done to these facilities in this market yet places like New Orleans, Chicago, Boston, New York, etc. are working with at least 2 decades old facilities and nothing is really being done there.

How soon before the Georgia Swarm and eventual Atlanta Major League Lacrosse teams request, nay, demand new stadiums?

This city is awfully accommodating to teams that have won a whopping one championship in half a damn century.

Oh geez, you have got to be kidding me. There is nothing wrong with the core of Philips Arena. Nothing.

If the owners don't like the arena and its spectacular location downtown, they are free to spend their own money to cosmetic improvements to the existing arena.

Yeah, put it somewhere with poor MARTA access, like the Civic Center lot. Great idea.
