Having lived in Seattle and currently in the SF Bay, I can NEVER go back to any chinese food in Atlanta. It's absolutely horrible to what you'll get out here on the West Coast.

I can imagine since there's a lot of Asian immigration out that way

And absolutely none here.
Boring, sophomoric and predictable.

I'm so excited to go to SF next month. I'll definitely be going to SF's Chinatown(heard great things) and trying out their Chinese food(I'm not even sure if the best Chinese food is in their Chinatown since I've heard it's kind of touristy). I'll hold you up to it to see if it's better then Atlanta's. Note that I've actually had authentic Chinese food since I actually toured China back in 2009 for a student ambassador trip.

No--don't go ITP. Go a little OTP--to the East Cobb staple of Buddha's Delight.

i think the problem is like a lot of other foreign foods here in atlanta— the problem is not that it isn't *available*, it's that it's so *spread out*. i'm sure there are just as many good chinese restaurants in the whole metro as there are in chicago, but when they're not all together with each other, no one knows where to look— they're all over the damned map! the same problem exists for good mexican, good korean, even good southern food. everyone has to come on here and ask because it's hit or miss all over the metro.

But isn't that better? I mean, what if it was all concentrated in a certain area? Good for the people that live near there, but then everybody else has to travel to get good Chinese food. Everybody should be within 5 minutes of decent Chinese!

But I will say, that's one thing that is a lot better OTP. It's much tougher to get a great steak out here than it is ITP, but much easier to get good Chinese.

I haven't tried all the chinese food in Atlanta, but whomever said that there was a lot of bad/subpar places is correct. Finding a good place can be a chore.

Canton Cooks is a good suggestion. Try Little Szechuan, Yen Jing, Simon's in Alpharetta. These places are not strictly american chinese, but they do serve some of those dishes.

As for good chinese food, Atlanta does alright. Asia square, Pleasant Hill in Duluth close to I-85, and a few other gems hold it down ok.
