I am aiming for Gwinnett County but when it comes to vets I don't mind driving. Any recommendations for a good vet? I plan to call around and do some price comparisons. My dog will need surgery when he gets there.

I would recommend the vet school / teaching hospital in Athens (UGA) since you're in Gwinnett. They are very good and prices are competitive.

OH! Too cool they're close! At one point in life I wanted to be a vet and saw there was the best school in GA. I'll contact them and try to set something up!

I understand your point, however. Experience does count. The vet school fixed my bird's broken leg with a piece of scotch tape and it lasted him many years.

We do, but there is always an attending physician nearby for anything risky. I don't think residents ever perform surgery without the help of an attending.
I'm not sure what vet school protocols are, but it makes me nervous because in healthcare there are plenty of malpractice laws in place where if you can prove proper protocols weren't followed, the hospital has plenty to lose. I think with an animal, the most you can ever hope for is the value of the pet. Georgia law sees pets as property, not sentient beings. So if you adopted your dog from the humane society, the most you'd ever be entitled to recoup regardless of gross negligence, would be the $150 adoption fee. So in my mind, vet schools just don't have as much to lose as medical schools, so you're putting a lot more trust in voluntary oversight.
That's just my initial opinion, if anyone knows different, feel free to chime in.
