Probably. But the decent size ones may already have fiber coming to their business. This would be great for a startup though, a community which we have been trying to build up.

This is great news for the city as a whole. Current citizens get a choice. It will certainly attract a certain amount of tech savvy folks that will be more likely in the future to rule out a city w/o true highspeed internet.

This will thankfully force the current craptacular ISPs to step up their game. If this happens, expect free bandwidth increases at minimum. Hopefully bigger (or no!) caps and lower prices to go with it.

Downside - now Google knows even more about you than you know about you know about yourself. At least we get some much needed competition from it.

I must once again correct myself, after reading the Google Fiber terms, it appears to allow personal non-commercial servers.

So far Google Fiber has been exclusively for residential use, but they've said publicly that they plan to introduce small business plans in the future; seems likely if they're planning a major expansion.

P.S. A lot of people use Google DNS in place of their ISP's servers (because the ISP's is slow, injects ads, whatever) so switching to Google Fiber wouldn't tell them anything more about me that they don't already know.

You are correct. 8.8.8.8 has been a very reliable DNS server in my experience. But that's optional. I have a love / hate thing with google. They make generally fantastic products. However, I've recently become more conscious of the value of diversifying your data and personal information.

What NIMBY crowd? Personally, Comcast right now is "good enough for me" and they just upgraded me yesterday at NO additional charge to 100Mbps down and 20Mbps up. So yes, until a better solution is available, Comcast is very good here in Atlanta.

When something else cones along, then I'll review it and determine if it's worth going through the pain of switching. Unlike some, I'm not enamored with the shiny object or the cool factor, but more the utility and cost.

Do I need more than 100Mbps? Not unless it's less expensive.

Considering Comcast charges $90 for 100 mbps as a promotional rate, it's hard to see how $70 for something that's 10x faster isn't a better deal (unless you're paying some kind of magical unicorn rate that no one else can get).

I don't pay that price, and it's not a promotional rate, but that speaks more to the ability to negotiate and buy smart.

As I said...if I can get better for the same or less, absolutely. Just not sure what the "NIMBY Comcast crowd" means.

I still don't know why I need Gb to my house, unless all of my TV programming is taking up that bandwidth too, the way AT&T uses DSL for video with U-Verse. With Comcast, my TV and VoIP are on separate pipes from my Internet traffic. I get 100Mbps to use fully.

Not to mention Google Fiber offers free 5mbps if you pay a flat $300 connection fee. Hard to beat $0 a month.
