Good for you and for West End, ATLWarrior. I am looking forward to this event.

You mean like the hookers around Myrtle Street in Midtown or around Peachtree Street?Oh but that's different I guess.

On my street along six new people have move in. We all are very successful and could have moved to the boring suburbs. No street hookers are not walking around all day.

However let's not be fooled, the most vital thing West End need are strong families to continue to move in. No one single event can sustains what West End really need. I think West End will be an example of what happens when people get honest about their stereotypes and prejudices. I admire the my white neighbors who were bold enough to move in and stay until it started to change.

West End is simply evolving into very beautiful community. The renovated homes have so much character, no cookie cutter homes at all. If I could put a percentage on how far West End got to go, I say 40 percent, but I like sense of communities and realness that other neighborhoods don't have. Each one of my neighbors watches my house and we know each other personally. Certain neighborhoods in Atlanta are now moving to the point of having their own little distinct cultures, regardless of how suburban people stereotype have perceived those places to be. Quite simply we no longer care what you think of us. We are moving forward and I love it. Thanks Street Atlanta Alive for highlighting West End with the first event of your kind for 2014.
The West End is a nice area full of potential. Many people will be pleasantly surprised when they come for the first time during this event.

I am an investor and I have lived in that area many years ago.I have even considered moving back someday if I find the right house.

Come on back. If we can just get rid of the West End Mall, and continue to get working families with kids to move in. Someone who is familiar with West End history, said that the construction of 1-20 through the heart of West End was one of the causes for its decline.

Also I'm appalled that the colleges in the area have not expanded any further to help with the revitalization of the area. College housing and shops would be a perfect fit to replace the mall.

Why would I mention hookers from different areas?

A negative one place does not justify a negative elsewhere.

Thanks so much for the info on Streets Alive. I went to one in Virginia Highlands last year and loved it.

Any advice on restaurants around there? I'll be taking Marta, so need it within walking distance. I had heard of Healthful Essence, but they are closed on Sundays.

Simply put, the colleges nearby don't have the money to help with the revitilization.

What is wrong with the Mall at West End? Considering the longstanding demographics of the surrounding neighborhoods, I think the mall is an asset for the local residents.

It is crazy how so many on this forum really don't know what they are talking about when it comes to stereotyping specific neighborhoods.

West End where this event will be held is a beautiful neighborhood. I also lived there for many years and wanted to buy there but too many owners of homes and banks and brokers tried to shiest us back when we were looking for a place. This was during the mortgage fraud crap over there was at its height. I still have many friends in West End and it is a great neighborhood, very beautiful, especially the historic section where Streets Alive will take place.

I am hoping I am in town so that I can attend.

Also, FWIW, I actually do like West End Mall, it is small and I know the layout/stores and if I need something from there it is a quick in and out. I got an affinity for it when I was a student and we used to walk up there all the time. It could use some renovation but I hope they keep it in the area.

Another FWIW, like a PP said, the AUC in the area is not all that rich when it comes to money. But they have made A LOT of improvements over there over the past 10 years. In case you were not aware Atlwarrior, Lee Street used to be filled with housing projects, as was Lowery Blvd (formerly Ashby St.). There were also a lot of run down boarding houses for students on Ashby and the area was filled with hookers of all varieties. Morehouse has had a lot of construction take place near the West End within this time period. CAU has as well as Spelman but their campuses are further away from the neighborhood so you wouldn't see any benefit, but all of the AUC schools have made a lot of investments in their campuses and in the neighborhoods. Morehouse runs an upward bound program that is utilized by a lot of students in West End and surrounding neighborhoods as does CAU. And the students over there are the primary users of the mall. As stated, I used it quite often when I was a student. Many residents in West End are former AUC students. We fell in love with the neighborhood and stayed. I wish I could have bought a home over there.
